Buyer’s Guide

When nursing an injury or wanting to prevent injuries, adequate support and protection is need. Make sure that you can still do the activities that you are regularly doing without being hindered by the pain caused by a knee injury.

If you want to find the best runners knee brace, you need to know the most important features that a good brace should have.

1. Support

One of the main reasons why you are buying a knee brace is to have the proper support your knee or knees require. While many are claiming they are the best, you cannot simply take their word for it, especially if you are nursing an injury. You have to do a thorough search to make sure that you can buy a knee brace that is suitable for the type of injury that you have.

Some knee braces would restrict your movement and control, while others are made to improve movement. Basically, the first thing to do is to determine whether or not you are planning to do activities that would require you to use your knees.

A prophylactic knee brace will be a good choice if you are looking for something that won’t restrict your movement. If you need a brace that would allow you to recover fast, and you are just planning to rest and only do some light activities, rehabilitative knee braces can be a good choice.

2. Style

Knee braces come in different types and styles, so you need to know which one would be able to provide what you need. The market offers a ton of options, and if you don’t know what your needs and preferences are, then it would be a challenge for you to find the right product.

Below, we have listed the most common types of knee braces that you will find.

  • Hinged

A hinged knee brace actually works as a protection against too much movement on your knees. It is made to make sure that your knees won’t be under too much pressure when doing different activities.

Hinged braces usually have rigid bars that would serve as a form stabilizer. They also feature a locking device that would prevent your knee from bending excessively.

  • ACL

If you are looking to wear an ACL brace, know that this is designed to prevent excessive rotation on your knees. It will reduce the stress that your knee experiences when recovering from injury. This type of brace is often worn by athletes.

  • Patellofemoral

Basically, patellofemoral knee braces are made to handle the concerns on your patellofemoral joints. This brace allows the patella to stay in its position while the knee extends to a certain angle.

  • Neoprene Sleeve

This is the most popular knee brace that you can use right now, and it is also the least complicated model that you can buy. Although, when it comes to its construction, a neoprene sleeve is extremely basic.

It is a type of knee brace that does not provide a lot of support and protection to your knees. After all, it is just a sleeve, but many still consider it as a knee brace.

The main purpose of this type of knee brace is to help retain the heat on your knee and reduce inflammation. If your knee is swelling, this is the best type of knee brace to use.

  • Knee Immobilizer

Knee immobilizers are worn right after a knee or ligament injury. Compared to other knee braces, this type of brace will go all the way up to your upper thigh.

This means that it will provide you with very little mobility. Since you have just suffered an injury, you won’t be allowed to make excessive movements, and this type of knee brace will make sure that it won’t happen.

This type of knee brace serves as a pain reliever. It has built-in plates on the side, along with a contoured plate, to protect your ligaments.

Runners knee

3. Size

This is one of the most important factors that you need to consider when buying a knee brace. No matter what features your knee brace has, if it doesn’t fit your knees perfectly, then it won’t give you the things that you need.

You have to remember that a knee brace that is either too small or too big can do more harm than good. If a knee brace is too loose, you won’t get enough compression to get the support that you need.

Knee braces can come in different sizes. Make sure that you check the size table that the manufacturer provides to make sure that you get the right sizing. Measure your knees using a tape measure before buying one.

The measurement should be done just below your kneecap. If your doctor provided a recommended size, then follow that. You can also look for a one-size-fits-all knee brace. However, you need to be careful because even if they are made to fit everyone, there are cases when they don’t fit you perfectly.

4. Comfort

Comfort is usually underrated when it comes to knee braces. Most people are just focused on support and compression because they think that as long as the knee brace can provide support, it is considered comfortable.

When you talk about comfort, you have to make sure that the brace fits perfectly. It should not be too loose or too tight. When you are moving, the brace should be able to provide the required mobility on your knees. It shouldn’t suppress you from doing your daily activities.

If you feel any discomfort when wearing the braces, it means that it is not the right one for you. The brace should be comfortable to wear and provide support at the same time. These two things work hand in hand when it comes to knee braces. The best runner’s knee brace allows you to make adjustments on the strap.

5. Breathability

When wearing knee braces, sweat is one of the things that you are worried about. Sweating can be prevented by using a breathable knee brace. You have to choose a knee brace that will provide you the maximum ventilation.

Aside from looking for products with a breathable mesh, you can also look for braces that reduce heat retention and those equipped with moisture-wicking technology.

6. Value

Do you have a lot of money to buy a knee brace? It doesn’t matter. You need to look for the best value. If you are on a tight budget, you will have to be more meticulous as there are some features that you may not really need.

How do you get the most value when it comes to knee braces? You have to make sure that the type of knee brace that you will buy can provide the things that you need. If you need knee support, fast healing, or more compression, you have to make sure that the knee brace can provide it.

There are tons of expensive brands out there, but it doesn’t mean that they are the best. As a matter of fact, you might even find a few cheaper brands that would provide the things that you need.

The most important thing that you have to check is how often you are going to use the knee brace. If you need to wear it daily, you have to look for a product made from the highest quality materials.

Knee braces

Other Important Things to Keep in Mind

Besides using braces for runner’s knee, there are other ways you can control your knee pain. Nonetheless, you should always consult a physician for any form of recurring pain, not just runner’s knee. Other possible solutions you could try are:

  1. Acupuncture. It involves (as the name suggests) puncturing sterilized skin using a plastic guide tube. If a skilled practitioner performs the procedure, your chances of making a full recovery are higher.
  2. Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation (RICE). Rest the knee frequently while elevated. Use ice to slow or stop the swelling and wrap a compression bag on the knee.
  3. Try to balance warm and cold temperatures on your leg. Place an ice pack or cold gel around the knee to reduce swelling. Then use a heating pad or warm water to warm the area and relieve stiffness.
  4. Painkillers. This seems to be the most obvious on the list. You would be surprised how many people remain oblivious to the profound benefits of analgesic drugs and natural medicines.

Keep in mind that people have different healing rates. When someone claims to have healed faster using any particular technique, it’s not guaranteed that you will too. You can always try new stuff for as long as it does not hurt you more.

In Conclusion

After physical therapy for your leg, a medical professional will often suggest that you look for an appropriate knee brace. That is if the doctor doesn’t already have one for you. The best knee brace for runner’s knee will, without a doubt, make your runner’s knee disappear much faster than any traditional methods.

  1. Great information thanks, I am an avid runner myself, most of my running tends to be offroad on uneven ground and I was wondering if there was anything you would recommend for ankle support? Would the knee braces work for helping provide better stability to each leg and therefore giving more stability to the ankles?

    Reply
    • Hi, Vaughn and thank you.

Offroad can be a very good method to strengthen your ankles. But at the same time is a little bit of danger because you aren´t running on flat roads.
Everything is good in a mix but running offroad is something that should be part of all runners.

If not needed I would not use a brace or sleeves for your ankles. They will better if they will get this challenges. I would prefer to focus on running in good shoes for off roads running.

But if needed, here is a good article about when to use ankle brace and too there are very good recommended ankle braces. https://sportssend.com/when-to

  2. So, I’m almost 40, and planning to run my first marathon in March, 2019. I used to be a runner, but it’s been about 2 years since I ran on a regular basis. I’ve never had knee problems before, but this time around both of my knees have started hurting on the front side of the tibia, just below and toward the midline of the patella. My doctor gave me some strengthening exercises, but I’m wondering if adding a brace until my legs and hips are stronger is a good idea so I can keep running while I do some targeted strengthening.

    • Hi, Amanda and thank you.

It is a great goal, and I really hope you get your goal!

About your question. In many cases, the brace helps. It is best if it is for a limited time but some need to use it for a long time, other not.

But having said that, I stress that you ask your doctor before you buy it! The reason is that we are all different and in many or most cases the injury is that too. So small details can change things if it is wise or not.

Because I want what is best for you and when we talk about injuries we need to be careful. Not at least when you have such a great goal in mind.

      Good luck!

  4. I really enjoyed the idea of the Ultra Sports Gear Knee Brace. Love the fact that it has been made by an actual doctor, who seems to know his stuff. Additionally, the fact that this manufacturer specializes in manufacturing various braces and supports for many different body parts is a huge pro in its favor. I’m all about the specialists over generalists as I feel the former by far most of the time tend to provide superior products.

The side strappings I will definitely enjoy, there is nothing more annoying than a knee brace that glides down over time. I hope this will prevent that. Absolutely enjoy the fact that this stuff is confirmed to treat stuff like Arthritis and dislocation.

Cheers! Thank you for your insights!

I agree with you about it is excellent when the specialist for more than one site come together. The doctor comes with his knowledge, and then the specialist in how to make the things, in this case, the knee sleeves.

It is in the same style and the tremendous Icelandic company, Ossur, have done it.

The side strappings are very useful. I know it personally that when a sleeve has been used for a long time, it can move a little bit which the side strappings take care of not happen.

  5. I’ve always been a sucker for doctor designed and created products. In regards to those, it just has always seemed to me that more thought and effort and knowledge goes into them, thus, making them the most beneficial and way more superior than similar products on the market.

I’m not implying that always is the case but to me, it makes more sense.

In that regard, I believe I will enjoy the Ultra Sports Gear Knee Brace the most. It’s also the No. 1 on your list, so that’s settled.

I love the other advice you gave about other measures to treat pain. This shows that you are not been biased and readers at heart. Though, they might offer temporary relief and we should always visit our doctors. Please, what are the best ankle braces you could suggest please? • Hello John, and thank you.

Thank you for your kind words.

I have needed to use knee braces many times, so I know how to wear it and what to have in mind. But luckily I had not needed it last years, so I have not used this sleeve myself.

But we have put much work to research it, special people who have used knee braces and after it, this is the results of the researchers.

Don´t hesitate to contact me if I can help you with anything else, or if you have any questions.

  11. For me, I would always go for the Blitzu Flex Plus Compression Knee Brace. I like it and the feel. It is very awesome, and besides, one of my friends make use of it here, and it works very well. Knee braces are great for runners and thought I had one before, but it got slack over time, and that is the reason I want to buy another one. Thumbs up on this

  12. Hey mate, I have the PowerLix Compression Knee Sleeve and love it. I think it’s one of the better options out of this list but can’t be 100% certain. I know my knee sleeve offers me pain relief without sacrificing flexibility or mobility. Also, I got mine for cheap on Amazon a few months ago. I also read reviews about it being too tight, and so I sized up, and it worked great.

  13. Hi,
I never had to use a knee brace yet – however, I walk about 45 minutes a day, and as I am aging, I just turned 55, I was wondering if you suggest wearing a knee brace as a preventive measure. I cannot say I’m experiencing pain or discomfort in my knees, rather more in my hamstrings and calves. So far, I’ve been more paying attention to using good shoes and stretching, but reading your article, I’m wondering if I would benefit from using a knee brace.
Another question was if any of these would be covered by insurance companies in the US – in other words, can you get a prescription for a knee brace.
    Thanks

    • Hello, Vincent, and thank you.

Thank you for your kind words.

Good shoes are, no doubt, a key thing, and stretching is always very important. And I must add that to many runners forgot how important good running socks. You can see a lot of advice about it here on this website under the running socks category.

But if your knee is fine and no problem at all, I recommended highly that you don´t need a brace. The knee should use the muscles and strength in it.

About the insurance companies in the US, I don´t know the answer to that question.

Don´t hesitate to contact me if I can help you with anything else or if you have any questions.
