Best Softball Glove Reviews

1. Wilson A2000 Fastpitch Glove

If you’re looking for a trustworthy glove, Wilson is definitely the best place to go.

You can find notable professional players across different sporting categories affiliated with Wilson, including softball.

The highly durable A2000 Fastpitch is one of the most sought-after Wilson items for young softball athletes.

Product Highlights

The A2000 has an appealing black and Vegas gold pro color to its leather, making it look professional and also extremely durable.

The Wilson A2000 weighs around 0.68 kilograms and measures ‎12.6 x 7.35 x 5.85 inches. Interestingly, the glove only weighs half as much as the conventional ones.

The best part is that you can choose between different webbing patterns based on your preference and position.

With the rolled dual welting design integrated through the liners, it will offer support and help your glove retain its shape over time.

Some gloves in the A2000 Series have the superskin technology, a microfiber that is only half the weight of the pro stock leather.

This material is also moisture-resistant, which means it doesn’t soak up sweat and is easier to clean.

Wilson offers a flat finger binding to this glove series for players who prefer having one finger outside the glove.

Don’t worry if you’re catching high-speed balls most of the time, as the glove has a strong pocket to absorb contact.

Likewise, you wouldn’t feel a stinging sensation below the glove’s pocket because of the honeycomb cell padding.

Lastly, the A2000 Series has a drawstring closure system you can modify to fit your hand.

Both left and right-hand mitts are available, and it’s easy to adjust on the fly, even while you’re in-game.

What We Like

The superskin technology is what sets the A2000 glove apart from its competitors.

You can play with this glove under any conditions, and it will still give you maximum performance.

It’s also perfect for higher-level softball divisions since it can endure fast pitches.

With this glove, you won’t suffer from hand soreness or swelling after catching fastballs during the game.

What We Don’t Like

It’s worth noting that breaking in this glove might take a long time.

While it deserves praise for its durability, there may not be enough time to get this glove game-ready.

You might even have to require professionals to break it in, which is a waste of money and time.

It’s also designed for smaller hands, limiting the group of players who can purchase the glove.

Pros:

  • Extremely durable
  • Excellent hand protection
  • A great mitt for different positions
  • Customizable fit

Cons:

  • Harder to break in
  • Smaller hand fit
  • Only available in one color

2. Mizuno Prospect GXS102

This Mizuno Prospect GXS102 is excellent for catching and throwing 10 to 11-inch softballs.

That said, it might be more suited to a younger audience and those with smaller hands.

It is professionally engineered by Mizuno for female athletes who need a gentler glove while catching softballs.

Product Highlights

The Prospect GXS102 has a smaller hand opening, which means it’s the perfect softball glove for young players.

Also note that Mizuno has designed this glove for a right-hand throw, so it will fit in your left hand for catching.

It has a black-colored, full grain leather shell, giving it a professional look and offering unparalleled durability.

The glove is 32.5 inches in circumference and weighs 0.46 kilograms, with a dimension of 10.71 x 10.81 x 6.71 inches.

With a butter-soft palm liner, the glove boasts improved comfort and feel while being durable at the same time.

Additionally, it has a double post web design, perfect for catching balls with visibility through the holes and offering great flexibility.

Don’t sweat it if your hand perspires a lot during game day, as the MZO lining is made from moisture-wicking fabric.

Also, it boasts its polyurethane power lock, ensuring your hand fits right in the glove through its PU pull tab.

As one of the most important things to consider as a catcher, the glove is very flexible and easy to close because of its thumb-cut hinge.

On another note, this Mizuno glove is outstanding when it comes to breaking it in.

It usually takes a moderate amount of time to break in a glove, but with Mizuno, it is game-ready with just a short preparation.

What We Like

This glove’s flexibility and visibility are beneficial for any young softball player.

For instance, with how much you can custom fit this glove to your hand, the risk of suffering injuries is significantly reduced.

It’s also easy to get this glove game-ready, as it requires minimal break-in once you’ve made your purchase.

What We Don’t Like

It only fits a specific set of young players throwing 10 to 11-inch softballs.

If you are looking for a glove to wear for catching and throwing bigger-sized balls, you might have to look elsewhere.

While you can customize this glove to fit your hand perfectly, forgetting to adjust some tabs might cause soreness or injury.

Pros:

  • Requires almost no break in time
  • Perfect for those playing in 8U-10U softball with 10 and 11-inch balls.
  • Professional look
  • Durable leather construction

Cons:

  • Slightly smaller for 12U softball with 12-inch balls
  • Prone to finger injury from glove tightness
  • Only for younger players

3. Louisville Slugger TPS Slowpitch

If you’re looking for a glove to level up your game, the Louisville Slugger is another ideal choice.

Even professional players like these gloves because of their high-end, top-shelf leather build, helping boost player performance.

Product Highlights

The TPS Slowpitch is a glove for serious players only. It is designed and tested to bring out the maximum performance of softball players.

The glove features a huge 14-inch design with an h/dual post web, perfect for giving vision while catching the ball.

With a size this huge, most players would use this glove for outfielding, but you can still use it in many positions based on preference.

Measuring ‎11.42 x 11.1 x 6.61 inches and weighing 0.68 kilograms, these gloves are light enough for running and catching the ball.

These gloves would arrive on your doorstep game-ready, requiring little to no breaking in before game-day.

In contrast to most softball gloves that get beaten up and worn out after a season, Louisville Slugger gloves have high-quality laces to hold their shape.

The pocket would also retain its shape to last more seasons, requiring fewer repairs and replacements.

Additionally, the back of the wrist has a dual cinch strap to provide a customizable fit for players with different hand sizes.

You can purchase the black and gold version or the red and white version of the glove. The only downside is that it’s only available for left-hand throwers.

What We Like

The large glove size is one thing we like about this model, as it extends the reach and area to catch the ball.

Moreover, even after it takes some blows and impacts, the pocket has an elastic property that allows it to retain its shape.

While the glove will require you to make some efforts to maximize your game, it is worth it if you’re serious about becoming better.

What We Don’t Like

The glove is only available for left-hand throwers since the right-hand throw has been discontinued.

If you are desperate to find right-hand throw gloves, you will need to find other retailers or another brand.

You also might want to check what type of softball you will play since this glove is only designed for slowpitch.

Pros:

  • Durable construction
  • Easy to break in
  • Snug fit

Cons:

  • Only for left-hand throwers
  • Requires skill to be maximized
  • Only works best on the outfield

4. Rawlings Liberty Fastpitch Glove

If you’re looking for the best quality gloves, there’s no doubt you will not go wrong with Rawlings.

In particular, you might want to take a look at the Rawlings Liberty Fastpitch Glove.

With a lighter weight than most gloves, you will have more comfort swinging your arm in catching and throwing softballs.

Product Highlights

Rawlings offers a wide selection of gloves from their Liberty Series, giving you plenty of options.

It measures 10.1 x 5.3 x 5.1 inches while weighing 0.61 kilograms.

The glove boasts premium full grain leather and quality stitching, ensuring durability and strength.

Rawlings took into account that some players hate the time and effort it takes to break in new gloves.

As such, you will receive a glove that only requires 20 to 35 percent break-in to get your gear game-ready.

It may look stiff once you receive it, but you’ll be amazed at how easily it breaks in. Part of the reason for that is that it is already oil-treated.

Don’t worry if you consistently change player positions while playing, as this glove is exceptionally versatile.

While some would say that the Fastpitch Glove Series is perfect for first-base players, you can use it anywhere on the field.

It has a deep pocket, so you can catch and throw the ball quickly without worrying about dropping it on the ground.

Another thing to note is that this glove offers extreme comfort, thanks to the Poron XRD palm pad and finger pads.

It also has an adjustable strap opening to ensure a snug fit. It comes in at 11.75 inches, so it might be limited to players with small hands.

What We Like

The gloves are incredibly lightweight, perfect for players who want more control in catching the ball.

While small, it gives a snug fit because of its adjustable straps and comfortable pads.

You can also purchase a glove specific to your throwing hand and player position.

What We Don’t Like

The glove is quite compact, meaning it can only fit players with smaller hands.

Some who purchased this glove have reported that it’s smaller than what they’ve anticipated.

Pros:

  • Multiple colors and patterns
  • Premium leather
  • Oil-treated
  • Requires little break-in

Cons:

  • Only for small hands
  • Specifically for younger players

5. Hit Run Steal Softball Glove

Are you looking for a high-quality softball glove that delivers both durability and performance? The Hit Run Steal All-American Men’s Softball Glove is your best bet. Let’s discuss the reasons why.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

Crafted from genuine American barnstormer leather, this glove ensures top-notch quality that stands the test of time. First, its dual palm construction guarantees comfort. In addition, it enhances the glove’s overall durability. These two features combine to make it a reliable choice for intense gameplay sessions.

Additionally, the glove’s lightweight design allows for a quicker break-in period. As a result, players adapt faster and focus on their game. The integration of a 100% wool blend padding significantly improves shock absorption. This reduces the impact experienced by hard-hitting balls. It also enhances on-field comfort.

Moreover, the glove’s H-Webbing design serves a dual-purpose function. This caters to multiple field positions. Not only does it provide structural integrity, but its open webbing design efficiently allows dirt and debris to pass through. Consequently, you can maintain a clean playing surface and ensure consistent play.

WHAT WE LIKE

What truly stands out with this glove is the meticulous attention to material quality. The combination of barnstormer leather and wool blend padding strikes an ideal balance between luxury and resilience. The innovative H-Webbing adds to its durability. All while keeping the playing area clean and tidy.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE

Buyer’s Guide

Choosing a softball glove isn’t as easy as you might think.

In fact, before you go off buying one, there are several things you need to add to the equation, such as:

1. Your Position and Dominant Hand

Glove types typically don’t matter for young children, but as you age, you’ll notice the effects this brings to the game.

For a casual player, there might only be subtle differences between glove types. However, in reality, these differences will give your game an extra boost.

If you throw the ball with your left hand, you need a glove for your right and vice versa.

The only time you can buy gloves for any hand is if you are a switch pitcher. It means you are comfortable throwing the softball using your right and left hands.

2. Budget

While some expensive gloves may seem the best option, you should always purchase them within your planned budget.

If you’re still young or buying for a little child, almost any cheap glove will do. Children will outgrow their gloves fast, which is why it only lasts for a season or two.

As players eventually advance to intermediate and professional levels, the requirements for excellent gloves increase.

3. Brand Reputation

Reputable brands are the most sought since people already know what to expect.

While your softball glove represents your identity as a player, it’s not wrong to have the same glove as the next guy.

4. Glove Size and Softball Size

The glove is an extension of your arm, and having the correct size will make it easier to grip and control.

Ideally, the glove’s length should only be one to 1.5 inches long if you’re an infielder. Furthermore, the length should not exceed three inches if you’re an outfielder.

The size of the softball also matters.

There are three different softball game types you can play, and these games use different ball sizes.

Consider buying a smaller glove for fast-pitch softball that uses an 11-inch ball. Slow-pitch softball may require you to use a bigger glove since it uses a 12-inch ball.

That said, gloves aren’t required for 16-inch softball games popular in Metro areas and Chicago.

5. How Often You Play

If you’re going to play for fun or maybe once every few months, you can consider a less durable softball glove.

On the other hand, if you’re on a team and need to play for the whole season, you’ll need a quality glove.

Considering this tip might save you a few dollars to be used for something else.

6. Webbing

Choosing the right webbing greatly impacts how you play the game.

While the webbing is influenced by your position in the team, it will also depend on your preference and game style.

If you play multiple positions or want to go the safe route, there are modified webbing types you can use for different positions.

Lastly, if you prefer a webbing design for the aesthetics alone, go for it.

7. Materials

Softball glove manufacturers may use leather, whether synthetic, hide, or other materials, in creating their gloves.

Some of these materials offer more grip, while others are a bit lighter.

Choose one with a comfortable feel and ensure it will compliment your game. Avoid gloves that become hard to use because of hand sweating.

8. Comfort

You’ll know that a glove is comfortable when you’re locked in the game and are one with your glove.

If the glove is truly comfortable, you won’t notice slight irritations or sweat running through your hand.

To add to that, putting it on and taking it off should be effortless.

Softball Glove FAQs

1. How do you know the right glove size?

It will depend on the position you’re playing.

Typically, infielders will use a smaller glove (around 11.5 to 12.5 inches) to transfer the ball quickly.

Outfielders need a larger glove size (between 12.5 to 15 inches) to catch flyballs better.

2. What’s the difference between softball and baseball gloves?

The biggest difference between softball and baseball gloves is the pocket size.

Baseballs have a standard size of nine inches, while a softball is usually around 11 to 12 inches.

3. What’s the difference between a fastpitch glove and a slowpitch glove?

The design of a fastpitch glove is often smaller but more durable than a slowpitch glove.

The subtle difference between the two game variations in softball allows for unique glove requirements.

Using a slowpitch glove in a fastpitch game isn’t recommended because it will wear out quickly from the high ball velocity.

4. How do I break in a softball glove?

The best way to break in a softball glove is by playing catch. Other methods you can use are applying glove oil, heat treatment, and steaming.

You can also leave a softball in the glove while you’re away so that it molds to its shape.

5. How do I take care of my gloves?

The most effective way to care for your gloves is to follow the manufacturer’s care guide.

Store your glove in a cool, dry place away from moisture with a ball in the pocket. Avoid subjecting it to high temperatures, such as leaving it under direct sunlight.

Which Glove Is Best?

From these five choices, we think that the best softball glove is the Wilson A2000 Fastpitch.

With a wide selection of softball gloves in this series, you’ll undoubtedly find one that will represent your game. There are different webbing patterns, colors, and styles to choose from.

If that’s not enough, you can rest assured in the fact that Wilson has been a trusted brand for decades.

Even though it only weighs half as other brands do, it offers excellent protection from ball impacts.

You also wouldn’t need to worry about the glove soaking up sweat, as Wilson added its superskin technology just for that.

  3. I remember all too well the stinging hands and strained fingers from playing softball as a child. In those days, the school didn’t bother to supply gloves, or maybe they just weren’t around at the time or were too expensive.

It must take some practice, though to get used to catching the ball in a glove, especially after using your hands for so long. I like that they are cushioned so that the ball doesn’t sting so much when it lands in your hand.

Apart from the breaking in aspect, the Wilson definitely looks like the way to go when it comes to gloves.

  6. I have just begun to play in a senior softball league.  It is not fast pitch but not what I would call traditional slow pitch either.  I have the glove I used 30 years ago.  It is still in pretty good shape but kind of loose.  I have been thinking about buying a new one, but don’t anything anymore about price, style etc.  This article has been a help.  Believe it or not, when I was in high school, we did not use gloves for softball.  If someone needed a glove, they were considered soft.  I need a glove and a new one.
