How to find the best golf ball for your game?

How to find the best golf ball for your game

The golf ball is an essential sports gear for a golfer. You know, your swing, distance, and speed are about how much you can achieve with the ball. Plus an amateur or a pro golfer must know how to pick the appropriate shells for your shots.

Also, if you want to practice for extended periods, some foam balls are cheaper and more forgiving. In contrast, practice for your ultimate game requires more. That is, brand, spin, and compression are some of the factors that come to mind. Hence, are you familiar with these specs? If not, here is a quick guide:-

Then, do you know your skill level? Are you a senior, a female player, or a recreational player? Then, pick golf balls with the right construction, feel, spin, compression, and dimple pattern matching your skill level. Then, clean and store your shells as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. That way, they will last more seasons with little or no maintenance.

What Is Your Skills Level?

Before going shopping, establish your unique traits. For only then can you find ideal shells to complement your moves.

  • Beginners & Recreational Players

Are you a beginner? Chances are you are yet to master your shots. Indeed, most of your throws could be landing in the lake or off the green. With more misses than hits, it is a costly start that needs dedicated hours of practice. Hence, you want shells that give you a head start to the game.

Aim at staying consistent in your rounds. That way, you can cut your stray strokes and increase your landing distance. Then, pick low-cost golf balls that are easier to control.

If you are a recreational player, foam balls are affordable and fun to use with family and friends. But, if you aspire to become a professional player, use X-Outs or lake golf balls.

Lake golf balls are premium shells retrieved from the pond or lake. These balls stay submerged for long (not more than six months). So, they must go through a recycling process to repair the water damage. After the restoration process, the shells look as good as new. Only, they are not as efficient as their perfect versions.

In turn, lake golf balls sell at a discounted price. They have a shorter trajectory. And, their ultimate performance will vary from brand to brand. Hence, a beginner golfer uses lake golf balls from premium brands to get a feel on what to expect in the future.

Likewise, X-Outs golf balls are ex-factory shells that never hit the shelves. That is, due to some minor blemishes, these balls sell at a discounted price as factory overruns. Yet, their performance marches that of blemish-free balls.

X-Outs sell at a higher price than lake golf balls. They are excellent for anyone who wants to gain a competitive edge from the start while on a tight budget.

Practice Golf Balls For Experienced Golfers

Are you a pro-golfer looking for shells for your practice? By now, you are familiar with most specs in an ideal golf ball. Then, pick golf balls with the farthest trajectory, most control, and highest bounce.

Then, what is your chosen brand? Do you prefer a softer or firmer shell? What about the compression and dimple pattern? And finally, the type of material and construction is crucial. Let’s explore all these aspects below: –

  • The Construction

The shell’s unique style and material combination define its final construction. This novel combination determines the ball’s flight coverage and speed. In addition, the material affects its response to the club.

Today’s golf ball can be a one-piece, two-piece, three-piece, four-piece, or five-piece construction. It depicts the number of layers making up the shell.

A one-piece golf ball is a firm low compression ball of Surlyn material. As a single construction, it uses mold-ins for dimple impressions. In turn, the ball can withstand relentless locations, retails at an affordable price, and has a much forgiving feel. Yet, the style lacks speed, hence achieves a shorter flight path when hit. Indeed, the shells are appropriate for beginners or recreational players.

Second, as the name suggests, a two-piece golf ball comprises of two layers. The inner layer is of a rigid resin material. And, the outer cover uses the tear-resistant acrylate product. In turn, you have a shell that goes further, lasts longer, hence improving your skills. But, dual-layered balls have poor control. The ball befits a regular player or a beginner who wants to progress to the next stage.

Third, a three-piece golf ball has an inner rubber core, a middle liquid or rubber layer, and an outer Balata, Surlyn, or urethane cover. This design results in a soft shell with a prominent rotation. Such a spin is crucial to a professional golfer who wants to maintain control of his shots.

Fourth, a four-piece golf ball is like the three-piece one, but with an added film for softness. Such shells are popular in PGA tournaments. With every strike, these shells redistribute the impact to the four layers. That way, they maintain a perfect spin-separation balance to achieve some of the farthest distances ever recorded.

Finally, the five-piece balls have an inner core, three mantle layers, and a soft urethane cover. This style achieves high speed, better shorts, and a softer feel. Due to their high-quality materials, most five-piece golf balls retail as premium shells.

Golf Balls for Ladies

  • The Feel

Golf balls can be firm or soft, depending on their construction. This feel determines how far the ball will land on the green. Before, golfers associated softness with shorter distances. Yet, of late, most renowned brands are churning out soft golf balls that achieve remarkable trajectory.

  • The Spin

A golf ball can land on the green with its upper side facing the direction of the stroke. Or, it may land facing you. Third, you may have the ball curving to the left or right while in mid-air. In turn, it settles on one side. These are the top spins, underside spins, or sidespins.

Now, a professional golfer wants the ball to bounce seamlessly to achieve a short birdie. Hence, he prefers having a shell that gives him more sidespins for the perfect strike. Indeed, with sidespin, the player can make a straight shot and flight path.

With the above facts in mind, golf balls can have a high spin, mid-spin, or low spin. High spin shells use their prominent underside to go farther on the green. Hence, they are easier to control with a superior feel.

Low spin golf balls capitalize on their top spins. That is, they move at a lower height, with fewer side spins. In turn, they have a shorter flight path but a longer roll upon landing. Most golfers who tend to slice through the ball achieve top spins.

Then, mid-spin shells are suitable for any skill level. For, they will achieve the distance and feel you want regardless of the prevailing conditions.

  • The Compression

A golf ball’s compression refers to how it responds when hit. That is, does it squash deeper or stay firm? Manufacturers classify their golf balls according to the compression of between  40 to 100. A resilient shell is a high-compression ball. It will absorb the impact and use the force to go further on the green. In contrast, a softer ball has low compression. A hard strike from the clubface achieves minimal swing speed and poor control, hence a shorter distance.

  • Golf Brands

Pick a golf ball from reputable brands only. These include Titleist, TaylorMade, Bridgestone, and Callaway. Each of these shells has a unique design that expresses the brand philosophy. For example, Bridgestone aims for an ideal compression for each player’s swing style. Likewise, Titleist believe that a short game is possible with a softer ball.

  • The Dimple Pattern

Last, a golf ball’s dimple pattern behaves like wings for the shell. These impressions on the cover of the ball control its lift and drag as it moves through varying air pressure and moisture.  A golf ball with zero dimples will launch at 120 mph but come to a halt almost immediately after the throw. In contrast, shells with more and deeper dimples achieve a higher trajectory, but at the expense of the landing distance. Hence, pick a golf ball that has the right number of dimples for your target performance.

Golf Balls for Ladies

Now, it is no secret. There are significant physiological differences between female players and their male counterparts. In particular, female golfers tend to have a lower swing and a more forgiving strike. Hence, their golf balls must be of a softer feel, convenient carry, and more and deeper dimples.

Golf Balls for Seniors

Golf Balls for Seniors

As you transition from your prime years to the senior period, you may experience a significant drop in swing speed. In turn, you need to switch to shells that achieve greater distance with lesser effort. Also, you may struggle with maintaining control. Hence, opt for balls with a firm feel and more backspin. Seniors can spot shells with bright colors and markings from far. Last, most seniors live off their retirement savings. You want to invest in durable golf balls that are great value for your money.

Conclusion

Then, do you know your skill level? Are you a senior, a female player, or a recreational player? Then, pick golf balls with the right construction, feel, spin, compression, and dimple pattern matching your skill level. Then, clean and store your shells as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. That way, they will last more seasons with little or no maintenance.

You ask about the best economical way to choosing a golf ball for you. Probably I will surprise that I recommend a ball which is not cheap. But it is, in my opinion, the best overall ball for beginners.

It is best suited for both amateurs and professionals. Good in both short and long play. It is right to say it is a long-term investment because you can keep using it while you develop as a player. The ball is Titleist ProV1; you can see a review of it here.

  4. I never knew there are different kinds of golf balls for different levels, interesting! I’ve wondered about the many golf balls that end up in the lake whenever I go to the gold course, great to know that they can last up to 6 months underwater! Do you think Golf courses would usually take out the submerged gold balls when they’re in the lake, or do they just leave them be?

    • Hello, Riaz Shah, and thank you.

Thank you for your kind words.

No, most Golf courses take the balls from the lakes. Many use the balls for training; even so, they aren’t as good as the balls that have not had the water problem.

You can see more about the effect water have on the balls here if you like.
