What clubs to take to the driving range

What clubs to take to the driving range

To get the best out of a Saturday afternoon at the driving range, a golfer needs to identify what clubs to take to the driving range. The right set of golf clubs will complement your swing. Putting, for example, can be nothing but hard with an inappropriate putter.  So how does a golfer decide on the right set of golf clubs? We will answer this question and more in this article.

But first, the golfer must choose what clubs to take to the driving range from these six categories that make up a golf set.

The Putter

An ideal putter for the driving range should match the golfer’s stroke. This putter should not over-rotate with every stroke. Instead, it should stay fixated at the target line or point towards the sky.

Putters are differentiated based on their weights. The right weight will stabilize the club and achieve an accurate stroke.

If you are struggling with an over-rotating putter, you should consider using a face-balanced putter. On the other hand, a golfer who finds it hard to achieve enough rotation for his stroke should consider acquiring a toe-down putter.

The Wedges

A pitching, sand, gap, lob, or a mix or all these wedges have a loft ranging between 45 degrees to 64 degrees. These wedges though not always necessary, come in handy when a golfer makes those below par shots. Hence, when practicing at the driving range, you should opt for wedges that deliver precision, has a center of gravity that adjusts well to the different lofts, has excellent spin control, and forgiving design.

The Driver

The driver is the most expensive golf club in the set. It must rank highly in various attributes. You should choose a driver that has a more forgiving swing. The driver comes in handy in fixing a sliced golf shot and saves you the frustration associated with such a shot.

It should also have a reasonable price. Finally, pick a driver that allows you to make adjustments on the club, either the loft or face angle to various positions.

What is the minimum and the maximum number of clubs allowed in a driving range

The Iron

The choice of iron depends on how far the golfer intends to drive the ball.

Below is a guide that a golfer can use to choose his set of irons to the driving range:

Club Average Distance – Men Average Distance – Women
2-iron 190 yards Not recommended
3-iron 170 yards Not recommended
4-iron 170 yards 150 yards
5-iron 160 yards 140 yards
6-iron 150 yards 130 yards
7-iron 140 yards 120 yards
8-iron 130 yards 110 yards
9-iron 120 yards 100 yards

The Fairway Woods

The fairway woods’ loft degrees vary according to the distance of the throw. The lower the loft angle, the longer the shot expected. The right choice of fairway woods must also be easy to control. 3, 4, 5, and 7-woods are the best pick for beginners.

The Hybrid

A low handicap golfer cannot miss hybrid clubs in his golf bag.  Choose a hybrid club that will substitute for long irons and woods correctly. They are versatile and more accurate off the tee.

  • Off- duty denim skirt or trouser.

Choose a wrap up dress that would not require any retying or tucking as a result of movements while playing. Sneakers are always a friendlier accompaniment to the dress.

On a cold weather, off-duty denim is certainly appropriate. You can also opt for an all white head to toe attire to give you a classic look. And on that note, sandals and heels are most noteworthy out of the question ladies.

Gents

There is no much limitation to men’s attire to a driving range. However, there are a few acceptable dress codes for men.

  • Tucked in shirts with collars
  • Knee length tailored shorts or trousers with pockets.
  • Long trainer socks

Furthermore, your choice of attire in golf goes hand in hand with functionality. Choose the right clothing for easier movement and comfort which consequently compliments your outward look.

Your attire of choice will be dependent on your style, your budget and the climate. If you are cognizant of what you want to achieve, choose clothes that will help you accomplish your goals.

What Should I wear To the Driving Range

Chilly and Rainy Days

Choose a long sleeve sport shirt or blouse that will provide a little protection from the cold. You will also find comfortable pullover sweaters designed for golfers. Wind breakers also serve the purpose on an all weather climate.

However, in the rainy season, the best option would be water resistant trousers specially made for golfing.

Warm or Humid Days

This is a perfect day for a driving range with a slight breeze that ensures a comfortable environment. Golf pants and shorts made from cotton bring comfort hence a breathable and fun atmosphere. A polo shirt and a hat to protect you from the UV rays work perfectly.

Unlike a private golf club, a driving range has less dressing rules. You can show up dressed-down and low key. Ultimately, Golf is still a sport hence you would be more comfortable in a nice fitting pair of sneakers, oxfords or loafers.

  1. You know, I never knew you weren’t allowed to share golf clubs on a driving range.  I think I may have broken that rule a few times, lol.  Good to know!  My main problem is distance, so I focus on my drivers.  I’m not the best golfer out there, so I really do not only enjoy the driving range, but I actually NEED the driving range, ha ha.  I really appreciate your site and the practical advice it offers.  Thanks for everything!

  6. Golfing has been a thing for my husband, so I feel he will relate more to this post than myself. However, there is a part that I could well deal with it. For example, that’s what to wear when going to a club. I, for example, don’t really give much importance to what I’m wearing when going to the club. I just throw a top and a pair of jean trousers, lol. I’ll make sure to take the corrections though. Thanks for sharing.

    • Hello Chloe, and thank you.

Great to hear about your benefit of the article.

The Dress Code has always played a big part in this sport. It is from the time it was more for men in high classes. Luckily it has changed and now is golf for both genders and all ages as it should be.

But the dress code has been kept and even so it should probably be more unformal it not so stupid. It holds some respects and more things so I can´t say I am against, but it could allow more can we say.

So that part of the post was written in this opinion in mind; keep to dress code but on the same time be as comfortable as possible.

  8. In-depth and educative article about how to choose clubs to take to the driving range, things were affecting your decisions, mistakes to avoid, and everything between that. I have been considered to start playing golf for a long time but always decided no yet. Because I have used to be an athlete at a very competitive level and if I began to golf, I would be very, very bad and shame on myself! :O

Thank you for your kind words.

As all over sports, and more things in life, everybody starts as a beginner. So it is nothing to be a shame of!

You should start to test how you like it. And if you want it, you should begin to training parts of it separately like driving, putters, etc. After no so much time you will start playing it on at least average level!

So you should definitely give it a try!
