Are Crocs Good Walking Shoes and Why Are They So Expensive?

are crocs good walking shoes

Who doesn’t know Crocs? It is a famous brand that is comfortable to wear, making it the perfect casual footwear for the whole family.

With the current situation where most people stay at home, they choose comfortable shoes rather than stylish ones.

However, as popular as they may seem, are Crocs good walking shoes? That is what we will explore today.

As it is, there are varying opinions on whether you can wear them all day as you complete errands going from one place to another.

What Is Crocs?

As mentioned, Crocs is a famous American brand based in Colorado.

Originally intended as a boating shoe, the first design came from a foam company in Quebec, Canada, that Crocs bought later.

Crocs come in different styles and colors for each season, and the brand also offers other fashion accessories.

According to some podiatrists, Crocs offer medical benefits, considering it as a therapeutic shoe.

Some even consider it a suitable footwear alternative for people who had foot surgery or other medical conditions.

Why Are Crocs Expensive?

Some people claim that Crocs shoes are the most comfortable they have worn, while others think it is just a fad.

Nevertheless, many people shy away from the brand because of its price.

Why does it have to be so expensive? Let us check some reasons.

Collector’s Item

Some people consider Crocs a collector’s item even though others find it not as fashionable as other shoes in the market.

You will also find Crocs in different versions and colors, making them more collectible, hence the high price point.

Comfortability

Time and again, consumers attested to Crocs shoes’ comfort, which the company intended them to be.

With the quality materials the company uses in their creation, the shoe will eventually adapt to the shape of your foot, providing comfort.

There is no hit or miss when buying Crocs shoes as they will conform to your foot’s shape as you wear them regularly.

Some consumers buy Crocs, even if they are expensive, because of how comfortable they are on their feet and not how fashionable they look.

Croslite Material

Most people believe that Crocs shoes are made of rubber, but that is not the case.

Crocs used its proprietary material called Croslite, a resin using a secret formula using foam cells that conform to your feet.

Croslite is mark-proof, which means you will not worry about damaging your Crocs with scuffs and stains.

TTThiThis material also feels soft and smooth against your feet so that no rubbing can cause blisters.

Additionally, the flexibility of the Croslite adds to the comfort you get from wearing Crocs.

Since no one else knew how to make the material but Crocs, the company had to shoulder all the expenses.

All those expenses are reflected on the shoes’ price tag for Crocs to continue creating them using the high-quality Croslite material.

Durability

Apart from Crocs shoes’ comfortability, people praise their quality and durability.

The shoes are waterproof, making them the perfect footwear for land and water.

It is a convenience provided by their durability.

In addition to being waterproof, you can wear them during the hot summer season and still keep your feet cool.

You don’t have to worry about the shoes breaking down as they can withstand hot temperatures.

To ensure all Crocs shoes maintain their quality, the company must continue using the same materials and production processes, including expenses.

Easy Maintenance

Trying to clean and maintain your regular shoes or sneakers can be challenging and may even cause you to ruin the footwear.

Other shoe types may require professional help or special cleaning tools and solutions, but not Crocs.

When they get dirty, all you need is to hose them down or submerge them in soapy water as you try to scrub off the dirt.

This ease of cleaning is another reason people love Crocs shoes, especially busy individuals who do not have the time to keep their shoes clean.

Health-Based

The company attests that its shoes are helpful to the health of your feet as it conforms to their shape.

This adaptability ensures that your feet receive the kind of support they should receive, eliminating issues like sore feet or arches and sprained ankles.

Although there are arguments about the support and health benefits of the shoes, the company stands by its belief.

With its signature open design with vents and open spaces, excellent air circulation allows your feet to breathe, preventing moisture build-up.

Also, health-conscious individuals are willing to pay the price to keep their feet healthy at all times.

Limited Editions

Crocs come in different versions, and the company sometimes collaborates with other brands or celebrities, creating limited editions.

When these collaborations happen, Crocs produce a limited number of these rare shoes, giving the company the option to increase the price.

Every limited edition Crocs has a unique design representing the partner brand or artist, making each pair special that attracting collectors.

Long-Lasting Quality

Crocs’ durability also means long-lasting quality that lasts for several years.

The shoe’s longevity is good for the consumers, not the company, due to lesser repeat purchases.

Though some people may buy a pair or two, the chances of buying another one from the same person are close to nil because they are long-lasting.

That is another reason for the higher price point compared to other brands.

Seasonal Market

Crocs shoes were for summer use; thus, they come at different prices depending on the season.

These shoes are not suitable for winter use because of their open design full of vents and open spaces.

That said, you will find Crocs have their highest price during summer when they are more appealing to wear.

When the demand rises, the company can increase the price, and consumers will still buy them.

Unique Design

There is no denying that Crocs shoes are different from other footwear designs from other brands.

The company’s founders saw someone wearing a clog-like shoe made of foam while on a Caribbean trip without tripping or slipping.

They thought of designing a summer shoe that anyone could wear in different environments, focusing on comfort and reliability.

The result of their collaboration is the current unique design of Crocs we see today that stands out in any shoe lineup.

Crocs shoes have three types of fit: relaxed, roomy, and standard.

Wearing the standard fit will give you a snug and secure feeling without restricting your movements.

The snug fit will not let your feet slide inside the shoes while providing your toes with enough room to wiggle comfortably.

The air holes you find in Crocs provide breathability during hot weather to prevent feet from sweating.

These same air holes act as drainage, allowing water to pass through to keep your feet dry and comfortable.

The strap feature on your Crocs secures your feet in place and prevents them from sliding without rubbing against your heel.

The treads on the Crocs’ outsole have a ribbed grip, making it safer to walk on different surfaces.

Are Crocs Good Walking Shoes?

Some people might think, why would anyone want to get caught strolling around wearing Crocs?

Lovers of these clog-like shoes would answer in unison: because they are comfortable to wear.

There is no doubt about their comfort.

These shoes have cushioned arch support and great non-slip tread, making them suitable for strolling.

Crocs are broad, offering exceptional comfort and relief for those with painful foot conditions or wide feet.

Crocs’ excellent shock absorption ability helps spread the excess kinetic energy that goes into your body as you walk.

This process eliminates the impact of your steps on the ankles, back, knees, feet, and hips, preventing injuries.

However, most podiatrists suggest not walking in Crocs for more than four hours or in long distances, especially the classic Crocs design.

Although they are comfortable to wear, they lack the heel support your feet need while walking as this portion remains open.

Crocs have specific models for long-distance walking activities for those who want to wear these shoes for extended periods.

What Are the Crocs Sizing Options

What Are the Crocs Sizing Options?

Crocs are available in three sizing options, offering additional comfort for your feet.

Let’s check each one and its comfort levels.

Standard Fit

The standard fit has the snuggest and secure feeling. It is the ideal size for people with regular feet.

This fit is the perfect option for hospital workers and healthcare professionals.

It has enough room for some little movement inside the shoes.

Your heel stays secured in place, ensuring that it will not slide as you move.

Roomy Fit

The roomy fit offers the most expansive option for Crocs shoes, ideal for people with wide feet needing the added room for comfort.

Also, it is the best sizing option if you want to put on chunky socks during the cold winter months.

Relaxed Fit

The relaxed fit is in-between the two sizing options, providing enough room for your feet to move while ensuring they stay secure inside the shoes.

Crocs as Walking Shoes

Are Crocs good walking shoes? Most podiatrists agree that these shoes are one of the most comfortable footwear to have.

There is no definite yes or no answer to this question, but it is said that wearing Crocs for walking for more than four hours may not be beneficial for anyone.

Some podiatrists have several recommendations on which shoes are suitable for walking.

  1. Crocs are pretty cool-looking shoes compared to sandals. I always think that wearing crocs for a long time could lead to painful walking. I wore sandals in the past for a long period and found that out the hard way. I was wondering whether croc shoes have a similar experience.

    Great article! 🙂

  3. Oh, I love crocs Other than being light and comfortable, what I like best about them is they are very easy to clean. Unlike runners, I can just soak my crocs in soap and water for a few minutes, scrub with a soft brush, rinse, and dry them.

And yes, they are good for walking anywhere, the beach, malls, around your neighborhood, etc. ☺ Some people may find crocs expensive but I believe that you can never put a price tag on comfort, quality, and durability.

By the way, do you know that we have a warning sign on escalators about wearing crocs? If you step on an escalator in your crocs, you better be extra careful because they might get sucked in along with your feet. I think this has to do with the kind of material crocs are made of.

  4. Hello,

Thanks for explaining this Croc shoe in great depth. I had not really considered this shoe as I thought it would be clunky to wear and be annoying.  I am normally a boot person, but you have given ample reasons to want to try the Croc shoes for comfort as I did not know it was made of the Croslite as you mentioned, I also thought it was hard rubber.  Very interesting read thanks heaps.

    • Hi, Erica Golding, and thank you.

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes, it is an extraordinary design. Design that people like or don´t like! But at the same time, many use these shoes even though they don´t like the design. Both because of how comfortable they are. And too, well maybe correct to say some statement that they fall in this family of shoes if we can say so!

But if you stand a lot over the day, they are great too. You probably have an interest in seeing this article which talks about it.

  5. I honestly couldn’t imagine walking long distances in Crocs. It seems they wouldn’t necessarily stay sweat proof or really comfortable considering the amount of time being on your feet. Now, I can see the draw for people wanting to wear these around town, at the beach, in the backyard. They are simple, comfortable, and everyone knows what they are. (iconic?) I don’t think I would opt for using them as walking shoes, but for quick jaunts…sure!

I agree! Great to take a comfortable walk and use it over the day to work and relax. But long walking, there are other better. Here is, for example, an article about good shoes for walking a lot in practice.

Great to hear about the benefit of the article too.

  6. Crocs are wonderfully comfortable which is why they can be deceiving when it comes to the argument of whether they are good for walking long distances or not. I am a dance teacher and we always encourage our dancers to stretch and not crunch their toes. The slip slop and croc type shoes encourage scrunching of the toes to keep them from falling if they wear them without back strap so we tell our dancers not to wear to much if walking or running a lot.

That is an excellent point. Thank you for that! I know exactly what you have in mind.

I played soccer and Team handball. The soccer shoes at that time (much better now!) were focused on the shape of the foot. But at the time, because of that, it was always very narrow on the toes. Some it was well-known problems around that. Luckily today, that is mostly history.

At the same time, it was different in handball as you use the toes more there.

Great to hear about the benefit of the article too.
