Elliptical Trainer vs. Treadmill

The main competitor of an elliptical trainer is the treadmill. Treadmills have long dominated the cardio market, but elliptical trainers are gradually becoming more popular. While both the machines give you a good cardio workout and mimic running effectively, there are key differences between them.

The main difference is the elliptical motion through the pedals that you get from the elliptical trainer. There is less impact on your body as the machine is helping you run.

On the other hand, treadmills only provide a running platform as you run using natural movements. As a result, there is more impact. For this reason, treadmills can be more robust to work out on especially when using an incline.

Elliptical trainers also allow you to stride in reverse, which can help you alternate between different muscle groups. With treadmills, you can change speeds to increase the intensity of your workouts dramatically. They are also less expensive than elliptical trainers.

Let’s look at three best treadmills and what features, benefits, and cons they have.

  1. I 100% would rather use an elliptical than a treadmill. It’s awesome that you burn the same amount of calories and you can burn even more because you can run longer on an elliptical. I like to read a book while using the elliptical, it can be a little bit difficult because of the bobbing motion you make but it isn’t too hard. It helps me get my mind off the running and I get a lot of great exercise in!

    • Hi, Mariah and thank you.

It is a big difference, and for sure many pros and cons, when you compare treadmills and the elliptical trainers. In the basic, both machines are very good with huge benefits but focus on different things.

But like you said, it is better to read books when you are on an elliptical trainer. The reason is that it is softer to use.

  2. As a past owner of a treadmill, I find this article very useful.  I’ve thinking about getting another treadmill but after reading this article, I feel that an elliptical trainer may be the best choice for me because there would be less impact on my joints.  I want to get back to training shape but I’m also limited to how much I can do.  I’ll keep the Schwinn 470 and the NordicTrac Elite in mind for when I finally decide to get mine.  The ProForm Cardio HIIT looks like it may put too much pressure on my joints.

    • Hi, Margarette and thank you.

I agree with you about the joints. Personally, I prefer using an elliptical trainer if my knees are making my a problem, as have happens because it is much softer than the treadmills.  And I like to idea to manage to use the arms more effective in the elliptical trainers. But at the same time, it is great to have the programme with more impact on my legs in the Treadmills

I change a lot between this two machines because it is different benefits of them. and I like the A

I think one of my favorites must be the ProForm Cardio HIIT Elliptical Trainer, mainly because of the space. Thank you for this review 🙂

    • Hi, Maria and thank you.

I agree with you about the legs and arm.  In my opinion is the most critical pros with an elliptical trainer that you use your arms more than on a treadmill plus it is softer for your legs, individual knees.

  5. Hello. I have always been a lover of the treadmill. When my husband and I go to workout, I head for the treadmill and he always heads for the elliptical!

This is definitely an in-depth review of the top three in each category. As you said, the prices are a bit cheaper for the treadmills but I guess it really comes down to preference and for me I prefer the treadmills. I do like the fact that the Proform 505 CST Treadmill has a space saver design.

Then again, maybe I should switch to the elliptical as they do sound kinder on the joints!

Yes, both machines have huge pros and some cons too when we compare this two things. Elliptical trainers are better for the joints, and you always move the complete body. But on the other hand, you can do more with the treadmill.
