Are Minimalist Shoes Good for Running

Buyer’s Guide

More and more runners are starting to understand the benefits provided by minimalist running shoes. Thus, they are starting to look for running shoes that would fit their needs.

Knowing the best brands and models is not enough to find the best one. You need a buying guide to understand the most basic features that you need to look for, and those are the things we’ll discuss below.

1. Drop

Drop is an essential factor when choosing a minimalist running shoe because the primary goal of these shoes is to enable your feet to touch the ground and not just the heel. Hence, the heel-to-toe drop is something that you have to check before you decide to buy a minimalist running shoe.

Drop is actually the difference between the height of the toe and the heel. If you want to look for the best minimalist running shoes, the rule of thumb is to find a running shoe with a heel-to-toe drop of one millimeter.

It is a bit difficult to find something like this because most of the barefoot shoes available usually have around three to four millimeters of a heel-to-toe drop. If you can find something lower, then go for it. If not, you can just settle for a barefoot shoe.

2. Material

Most people don’t really care much about the material of the shoes. As long as they claim that it is durable, they will buy it without question. When searching for the best minimalist running shoes, though, you have to make sure that you check the material as it would affect the level of comfort that the shoe can provide.

Barefoot running shoes are made to provide a natural feel or make you feel the ground like you are not wearing anything. The materials used should be flexible and lightweight. If you are still a beginner, you can try using more shoes made of durable materials because you need to adjust to the new feeling.

3. Price

When looking at the price of minimalist running shoes, you first need to check your current budget. Are you capable of buying a more expensive running shoe? Although these shoes are not extremely expensive, you might want to check the price and their features before buying.

For beginners, you should focus on the durability of the shoes. Instead of looking at the more advanced features, you should familiarize yourself first by using barefoot shoes. Once you get the hang of it and you are planning to buy a more advanced model, you can go for a mid-range running shoe.

If you have the money to purchase a more expensive model, then go for it. Expensive brands can provide better comfort and protection to your feet.

4. Sizes

Size matters, especially when it comes to shoes. If they don’t fit perfectly on your feet, then you made a mistake with the size.

Sizing is probably one of the hardest because you need to make sure that the shoe fits you perfectly. They are designed to copy the natural shape of your foot, so getting the right size on your feet can be a bit tricky.

We have different foot shapes, so your size might be different from someone’s. The best thing to do is to try the shoes on before you buy them.

Don’t just rely on intuition. Even if you know the size of your feet, it might change when you are buying minimalist running shoes.

You should try looking for shoes when your feet are at their largest size, which is in the afternoon or evening because your feet swell throughout the day.

5. Comfort

When you are wearing shoes, especially minimalist running shoes, they should be comfortable. Basically, the rule of thumb for a minimalist running shoe and a traditional running shoe is different.

For traditional shoes, you should be able to put at least one finger between the heel and the back of your shoe. For a minimalist running shoe, it should be tight and snug.

You will feel like you are not wearing under your feet so the shoes must be tight and snug. It won’t be comfortable to wear if the shoes are too loose.

You should also make sure that the running shoes are breathable. Your feet will start sweating after a few minutes of walking or running, so it should have a breathable mesh so that your feet won’t be damp.

Many of you have tons of questions concerning minimalist running shoes. We will try to answer some of the most common ones.

Is It Better to Be Barefoot or Wear Shoes While Running

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are Minimalist Shoes Good for Running?

Yes, minimalist shoes are made primarily for walking and running because they follow the natural form of the feet and toes. It is an excellent choice for some runners, but there are some exceptions to this.

If you’ve had injuries or foot problems in the past, it won’t be a good idea to use one. As such, before you decide to buy one, make sure you didn’t have any foot problems in the past. If you do, you can ask your primary care provider if this kind of shoe is right for you.

2. Are Thin-Soled Shoes Better for Running?

Thin soles are definitely better for running because of the sensitive foot nerves, which send signals to the brain. By running or walking barefoot, the feet and brain can “communicate” quickly.

Therefore, the brain can work better to help keep your balance. Your feet will also be more flexible with thin-soled shoes.

3. Should You Wear Socks with Minimalist Running Shoes?

You don’t really need to wear socks when you are wearing minimalist running shoes, but you can do so if you want. Minimalist running shoes don’t provide any arch support or stability, so wearing socks can be a good thing sometimes.

You can also wear socks to reduce the odor coming from your feet. The socks can also serve as protection against blisters.

4. Is Minimalist Running Better?

It can be yes or no, depending on your preference. You can run with regular running shoes, and you can also run with a pair of minimalist running shoes. Barefoot running can improve your strength and balance and help you develop a natural running style.

However, there are risks because of a lack of protection, which can lead to injuries. Regular running shoes have better protection, but when it comes to running, minimalist running shoes are still better.

5. Is It Better to Be Barefoot or Wear Shoes While Running?

Running barefoot is always better as it allows you to use your feet without any hindrance. The only problem is the risk of possible injuries. It is not advisable to run barefoot, especially on paved roads.

Wearing shoes provide a layer of protection on your feet, so most people prefer using shoes instead of running without wearing anything on their feet.

Final Verdict

The feet are the main foundation that carries the entire body throughout the day. It is therefore essential to keep them healthy and strong by using the best minimalist running shoes.

Among the shoes we’ve discussed, the Whitin Men’s Minimalist Trail Runner and Whitin Men’s Cross-Trainer shoes are what we like best. They are made with quality materials, provide great protection, and offer more support and comfort. These pairs of shoes are definitely a good buy that will strengthen and make every running session a wonderful experience.

  1. This type of shoes seems to be becoming more main stream with more and more people buying them for the perceived benefits of being “more natural”.

In my experience being an avid train running enthusiast, one needs to protect the foot from the uneven stones and rocks that are common to a train running conditions.  While the Whitin trail runners are listed as providing better protection, are they better than the FujiTrabuco series from Assics which I am accustomed to wearing or what are the major advantages?

Yes, the popularity of this type of running shoes has been raising bot quick and much. But as I see it, it is great that there is now a lot of possibilities for a wide range of types of runners and different styles. But, because of that, it is vital to know or find out, what fits for you.

About your question about the Asics GEL-FUJITRABUCO 7 trail running shoes (guess you have number 7 in mind, but generally it is not critical) vs. Whitin Men’s Minimalist Trail Runner.

There is a big difference. Number one if you have been in a problem with injuries or foot problems I would use Asics GEL-FUJITRABUCO 7 trail running shoes rather than barefoot shoes.

The Whitin Men’s Minimalist Trail Runner is lower and much lighter with good protection. On the other hand, the Asics GEL-FUJITRABUCO 7 is, probably, more comfortable for many runners. Too, it is heavier but has excellent support. So, in the end, the choice is a lot based on what style you like more, barefoot or not.

Thank you for your kind words.

This shoe is good for walking too. You get the barefoot feeling there also.

What I had in mind with the different sizing schemes is that their sizing schemes are a little different from most brands.

Before I answer, you are right to mention, like I have done in so many posts, what we are all different, both in the sense that what shoes fit best for the body and too what we have in mind.

I have been more in road running, but my favorite shoes have changed through time. Both Adidas and Under Armour fit my personality very well, and I like their style too. So I have used most shoes from these brands, even so, I have used other brands also throughout the year. I can mention brands like Nike, Puma, and Mizuno.

At the moment I used this par most, used this Amazon post so you can see all information about it.

      Good luck.

  4. I am a regular jogger and I find this article interesting. For me comfortability is everything when it comes to shoes and my choice would be the Whitin Men’s Minimalist Trail Runner shoe. It looks well balanced for me.  However I jog with my little cousins, so isn’t there shoes of smaller sizes of these types?

    Cheers.

Thank you for your kind words.

About your cousins, I´m sorry, but eight is the smallest. There are barefoot running shoes for kids on the market, but I don´t want to recommend one on this time because I have not researched it as much as I want. I don´t want to suggest things before I have researched it wll enough to decide if I can recommend it or not.

      Good luck.

  5. It’s always important to make sure our feet are as comfortable as possible when we go out to jog or run. Developing blisters on your feet because, you wore the wrong shoe is really not pleasant. I like the minimalist running shoe because, it allows a lot of space for my toes. If it really feels as comfortable as being barefoot, then it’s fantastic!

I quite agree with you, the Joomra Minimalist Trail Running Barefoot Shoes stands out because of it style, and it’s price is one that is also budget friendly. Thanks for sharing, warm regards

  6. Hi,

It was a great review! I am hoping to get back into running in the spring, and I prefer a minimalist shoe. When I ran before, there weren’t as many choices. Whew, now there are so many that have positive features; it is a little overwhelming.
I did notice the review was men’s shoes, which is fine with me, but then I wondered if there was a specific reason I should look for women’s shoes. Is wearing men’s shoes, okay? I have always thought it was just more about color selection than anything but thought I better ask.
I did laugh at Oranginer Men’s Shoes. It looks like they have a fidget spinner on the bottom!
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    • Hello, Lisa, and thank you.

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes, this is all men’s shoes. Sometimes the reviews are with more men or women products and sometimes mix, which can be much reason behind it.

But you can many times use men’s shoes. It is not a question of color, even so, sometimes it can be it, but how the foot is. For example, many women with wide feet feel it better to use men’s shoes.

I agree that Oranginer Men’s Shoes are very funny when you see them. But at the same time, the spin is handy, particularly when you run on wet ground.

  7. Hello, Benson, and thank you.

When picking running shoes, comfort is a factor to be always considered before anything, even quality. There have some good shoes available, and they don’t have the good features we all look out for in shoes, and for me who I am more likely to get the Whitin Men’s Minimalist Trail Runner before any other because of its feature, I have seen here. I hope to refer to this post when I need running shoes.

    Best regards.
