the best home treadmill for running

Factors to Consider When Buying a Home Treadmill

If you are looking to purchase a new treadmill or a just interested in replacing your current model, these are the key factors that you should always tick before settling on the best home treadmill model.

Size and Space

How much space can you dedicate for the treadmill in your home? An average treadmill measures 64 inches long and 28 inches wide. A foldable treadmill has an average height of 5 feet high.  It is important that you match your available space to the size of the treadmill you intend to buy.

Your Intended Purpose

Try to visualize yourself on that treadmill: Are you running, walking, or jogging? If you’re a pro-runner, get a more technologically advanced treadmill; one that can simulate an actual terrain. On that note, if you are tall and you intend to run, get a treadmill with a more extended track size and an excellent horsepower motor rating so that you have enough space for extending your stride as the high motor power capacity withstands the strain.

Adjustability, Weight, and Assembly

Not all treadmills can be folded or digitally adjusted for a customized workout. Purchase a treadmill that has a digital incline control setting so that when you increase or decrease the steepness of the running track, you do not have to stop first.

In addition, a good treadmill will be easy to fold up and store away. The weight of the treadmill determines its mobility. How easy is it for you to move the treadmill from one corner of a room to another?

Some treadmills are usually preassembled, which saves the hassle of looking for a professional to assemble it for you.

what is the best home treadmill

Warranties

Buying a treadmill is a long-term investment. Always check for the manufacturer’s warranty offer on the motor, the frame, and labor. The more extended the warranty, the better for you. A good treadmill can have a warranty on its motor of between 10 years and 15 years. The frame and labor come at a shorter warranty period of between 2 years and five years. Always remember to compare the warranty offer on your preferred treadmill against other treadmills with similar features.

Durability and performance

A good treadmill will have a strong horsepower motor that can deliver smooth performance, last longer, and withstand the various intensive workouts.  Check for treadmills with powerful dust prevention systems, durable belt material, and steel frames.

The Technology Used and Additional Features Provided

Customization:

From having consoles that monitor your progress to those that entertain you with games, treadmills may also have such additional features such as Bluetooth compatibility, a heart rate monitor, customized frame color, and extra high-speed capacities.

Digital touchscreens let you set multiple user profiles for different workouts, choose a language of your choice, view interactive video workouts, and even watch TV online. Maybe the latter is not such a good idea because you need to concentrate while exercising on the treadmill. All these customized features usually come at an added cost, but sometimes they are worth the cost.

Foldability design:

A good treadmill should have foldable and portable frames. This feature not only saves space in your home but also makes cleaning of the treadmill easy especially underneath the treadmill. Of course, this additional feature tends to come at a higher price, so be ready for it. If you go for foldable designs that are at a low cost or at a similar rate to that of the unfoldable design, chances are you are compromising on stability. Foldable treadmill designs are made stronger by their improved frames.

Incline Settings:

When you are out running on a steep slope, wind resistance can deter you from doing more. Some treadmills have an incline motor, separate from the belt motor, attached. This incline feature allows you to set an incline of 5% to 15%, with 1% being the no incline level equivalent to running on a flat surface.

Commonly Asked Questions and Answers Concerning Treadmills

  1. What is the most critical factor to consider when buying a treadmill?

  2. Whereas all factors previously discussed are equally important, it is important that you prioritize on durability and reliability. Buying a treadmill is a long-term investment, and it should not turn into a nightmare of constantly repairing and maintaining the set.
  3. What is doe CHP mean?

  4. CHP stands for continuous horsepower. If you have to get technical, compare the CHP to the RPM indicated because the RPM forms the basis for calibrating the CHPs. The lower the values, the stronger your motor and hence the better the performance.
  5. What is the difference between an LCD and an LED display screen?

  6. A Liquid Crystal Display screen is the older version display unit and has been out-phased by the new Light Emitting Diode unit. The more modern LED unit has better clarity and contrast, lasts longer, and can better withstand vibrations from a workout.
  7. How can I tell if my warranty is a good bargain?

  8. As a rule of thumb, the frame and deck should come with a lifetime warranty.  A shorter warranty on the motor may be indicative of low quality. Parts warranties should range from 1 year to 6 years.  Warranty on labor is up to a maximum of 2 years. If they give you more, that’s a plus.

In Conclusion

A home treadmill not only gives you the discretion and privacy you would want to concentrate on achieving your results away from the on-the-road distraction. Whichever treadmill you settle for, ensure your long-term investment results in a higher calorie burn cardio workout for you. You may find that more than one supplier distributes the treadmill model you want. In this case, the installation and after sales service provided by the supplier is important.

Some suppliers offer trade-in options when you want to upgrade your current treadmill to a more sophisticated one. Others will stock for you all the parts and lubricants needed to maintain the treadmill. Still, others will offer free orientation on how to install and run the treadmill.

Look at all these factors before settling on the treadmill that you intend to buy. Overall, Gold’s Gym Trainer 720 takes the crown for the best home treadmills in 2020.

  1. Whenever I sit down to watch TV I think: “If I had a treadmill, I could be working out right now . . .” But I wouldn’t even know where to begin in looking for a treadmill. You give some good guidelines for people like me to begin the search. Space and size and weight would be the biggest factors for me, I think. I would want something that is easy to move, but wouldn’t a lighter machine be a less durable one?

    Reply
    • Hi Shannah and thank you.

I absolutely agree. One of the benefits of having the treadmill at home is this possibility you talk about. The possibility of jumping on the treadmill when you are watching sports or your favorite programme on TV, getting good exercise at the same time you enjoy the TV.

Compare the warranty offer on the motor, the frame, and labor. If it is normal, with the fact in mind which I name in the article there is no reason you should be worried about the lighter machines:

  3. Hi there:

I have a pretty nice treadmill that I use at home but not as nice as these.

I’m 65 years old and have always been into physical fitness. Because of this, I’m in good shape for an old man! Have kept my weight the same for decades and that is likely due to running outside and on my treadmill as well as the other exercising I do.

These are high-quality treadmills and I especially like the features like the 12 mph speeds and 15% inclines. I know with these kinds of features a person can get a great workout.

The XTERRA Fitness TR150 Folding Treadmill is a good one because of the padded deck. I noticed that when I used my treadmill my feet and legs still took quite a pounding because it wasn’t padded.

Anyway, these treadmills are great looking and these features are top notch.

    Thanks!

    • Hi, Christopher and thank you.

You obviously the same ideology as I do. That is to mix running outside and on treadmills. This combo works very well. Depends on weather, like when it is frozen ground is better to use a treadmill and when the sun is shining, you should go out, mood, etc.

About the inclines. Mix it and use it a lot give you an extra benefit. When you run outside, it´s not flat all the time, and it takes more energy in training to use it. It doesn´t make a long time to feel the difference.

I like the XTERRA Fitness TR150 a lot. The display is so clear, and the speed range is good.

  4. Fantastic review. I was searching the web for a treadmill and came across your article. I recently had blood work done and my doctor informed me my cholesterol is high. I decided at 50 years old I wanted to start eating better and start some exercise. My doctor suggested a treadmill. I’m really excited I came across your well written review, not having a clue what to look for. All my questions have been answered and I really like the proform pro 2000, I believe that will get the job done. Thank you so much for all the information and I will be returning for future articles.

Great to hear your benefits of the article.

The proform pro 2000 is an excellent choice. Very silent and the wide tread belt made is very comfortable to use.

      Good luck.

  5. The incline feature seems to have to be manually adjusted or doesn’t have one on most treadmills. I thought that would be a “must” for all treadmills since it relates to running up hills or mountains. Do you know if there is a treadmill that comes with a watch that can keep up with your heart rate & calories easier? That would be a great treadmill to have since the watch would stay on you easier & you wouldn’t have to hold on to the treadmill alike some of them listed. Rachel

    • Hi, Rachel and thank you.

All treadmills have an incline, and most are similar, up to 15%. But not all. For example, have XTerra fitness TR 150 manually adjusted. And ProForm PFTL 60916 505C ST up to 10%

I haven´t heard about treadmill which comes with a watch. I doubt it, but it is possible. But I think that is very unlikely because there are so different things people are looking for in smart watches. There are always basic things to have in mind when you buy a, but after it, there are various factors which people are thinking about so it would be a risk for the treadmills brands to add a smartwatch with the treadmill, even so, it would be useful in many ways.

If you are interesting, I wrote an article about what to have in mind when you buy a smartwatch.  You can see it here if you want.

  6. It really is great how treadmills can vary in size depending on leg stretch when running, or just having one that is compact or more to the point can be folded away and stored without a problem if you don’t have space.

It very benefited for me to see the difference between the treadmills so I can see what fit best in my home and for myself.  Thanks for showing us many options today and your reviews on these.

    Cheers, Sharon

We are all so different. So it is no which fit for all with treadmills in mind. Same for the houses. Some have massive space in their homes and other small flat and everything between it. So it is vital for me to have that in mind when I decided to list because like I have stressed many times, the purpose with this site is to give all types of people with different goals in mind, or different interesting. So to choose high quality in treadmills but at the same time have some range is very important.

  7. I have been looking for a treadmill for my house. But it is not a easy decision choosing between almost thousands of models. But this article has shortlisted the top 10. One less work for me. Now I just have to see which one fits my house from this 10 and go for it.

Just one question- Do I get any warranty with these treadmills?

Looking forward to your response. Thank you for the help.

Yes, it is a warranty for all the models. But it varies a little bit between the models, so it good advises to look at it with the models you like most.

      Good luck.

  8. I’m a walker, not a runner, but I enjoy walking on treadmills better than concrete because it is easy on the knees. The Nautilus looks awesome and not as expensive as I thought it would be. The LifeSpan TR1200i looks like the next best and I like that it folds up out of the way. Your extensive review of treadmills is very helpful. Thank you

    • Hi, Alexander and thank you.

Yes, I agree. The treadmills are very good for the knees.

And about the walking, I had stressed it that walking is a great exercise. A lot of people underestimated which is sad because if you take all the things in it, walking is one of the best forms of training.

      Good luck.

  9. i.m having arthroscopy knee surgery next week and doctors have already told me that a large part of my rehab therapy and a speedy recovery will be to do a lot of knee exercises, particularly walking at first and jogging later on.
I came across your website here while i was doing research on maybe purchasing a treadmill of some sorts for home so i do not have to go out to a gym to do my therapy. You have quite a large selection of treadmills here which i did not realize so many existed.
I am taking the position to purchase my own treadmill as to help me recover from my surgery but also the long term effect of preventing any other knee injuries in the future. You certainly have made the decision more difficult but i’m sure i will find the right one. Thanks for so much useful information.

Sad to hear about your injuries but I hope that you recover soon. And yes, it is correct to take one step at the time but not run too soon.

  10. Thank you for this great review on the best home treadmills.  Like many people I work full-time and I have a young family so it’s not possible to get to the gym as often as I would like.  Home treadmills help me fill this gap in my fitness routine. I like that the TR1200i Folding Treadmill can be packed up and put away for when visitors come over and when I want to vacuum up around that area.  I was wondering if you had a picture of it in it’s folded up state?  Treadmills are very heavy these days. Can 1 person move it around easily or is it a 2 person job?  The ProForm PFTL60916 505 CST looks very technical with 101 buttons. Is it still very user friendly. There really are only a few simple data and analytics based things that I want to know.  I don’t need all the super advanced things. Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi, Glenys and thank you.

It looks like home treadmills is an excellent choice for you. You have it at home and can use the time when it is best for you without spending a time to go to the gym. When there aren´t much time, it is good to manage it with the maximal benefit for your fitness routine.

TR1200i Folding Treadmill is very handy. It is an easy job for one person to move it
You can see a good photo of it with the folded up state on Amazon. You can click here to see it.

About the ProForm PFTL60916, you usually use only a small part of the flexible programmes. You find out very quickly what to like most and have the most benefits. But I think TR1200i is excellent for you because the space part and how easy it is to move it around.

  11. With so many options I’ve always wondered what the best home treadmill was. I really like the ones with a lot of incline and a high speed. The pro form pro 2000 looks like a good option for me. I like that I can go up to a 15% incline and 12 mph speed.

I would like to try doing some  hiit training and it looks like I would be able to do that with this treadmill. I was thinking about getting a treadmill for my mom for Christmas. Which treadmill would you suggest for someone new to treadmills?

    • Hi, Travis and thank you.

Yes, there are many great treadmills today. What I have focused on with this list are 2 things. A) Obviously, find what I believe is the ten tip home treadmills. B) But at the same time have good varite so a wide range of people can find useful information about the treadmill that fit for them. There are so many things to have in mind when people choose one, and it is vital that people get the best information they can have. With this range and pros and cons, I believe that I have put together an interesting list which at least most people find something for them.

About the gift for your mom, in my opinion, is Gold’s Gym Trainer 720 the best one of many. Special because the AirStride cushioning to absorb excess shock and keep you comfortable throughout your exercise
Has a full running track making it convenient and safe.

      Good luck.

  12. Hi

I must say that these are some of the best thread mills I have ever seen. I really like how you have gone into the advantages and disadvantages of each thread mill. Along with what to look for, which makes selection much easier. There are so many considerations, and you have explained each one very well. What I look in a thread mill is longevity and how easy it is to assemble, as I do not what a long workout in putting it together. As long as any of the ten reviewed matches these two criteria, then I am a happy bunny.

Can any of these thread mills be used on uneven surfaces?

    Thanks

Thank you for your kind words.

Great to hear about your benefit of the article too.

About your question, I would not recommend to use it if it is many uneven surfaces. It is difficult to run when it.
