The Buying Guide – Three Things To Consider When Choosing Running Socks

Below are some important questions to answer before buying a pair of the best running socks for men and women in 2023.

  • Do you sweat a lot while running?
  • Do your legs swell due to poor blood circulation when you run?
  • What time of the day do you hit the trail?
  • Are you prone to getting blisters or fungal infections on your feet?

The three key important features of running socks are functionality, performance-boosting abilities, and comfort.

What is the best running socks

Functionality

Support

Good quality running socks will give your feet the additional grip needed to keep you stable on the track. Stability in feet while running prevents pronation-related problems such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, and calluses. Moreover, poor-quality socks that feel slippery in the shoes can easily cause you accidents when running.

Protection

The best running socks will not slide or cause friction to your feet as you run. These socks also come with a double-layered fabric that has moisture-wicking capabilities to protect your feet further from getting blisters. In the process, these socks suppress the growth of harmful fungi and bacteria.

Compression Capabilities

The best running socks are durable and elastic, resting just above the knee. This design allows the socks to compress your veins and improve venous blood circulation as you run. Consequently, they prevent blood clots, a hidden danger associated with runners who often mistake clots for muscle strain.

These pressure stockings are also attributed to the speedy recovery of runners because they reduce the soreness, leg swelling, and muscle fatigue experienced after running. If you have a history of vein diseases such as varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, and spider veins, running socks can help alleviate the effects when worn constantly over time.

Recovery from a run

Another critical aspect of running socks is their ability to maintain elasticity, padding, and firmness even after several washes. This is important to avoid replacing your running socks often.

best compression socks running

Comfort and Style

Cushioning

Thick socks provide warmth to your feet in the morning cold while cushioning them from underneath against hard impact for a comfortable running experience. Running socks padded at the heel and rear areas will cushion you from excessive swellings.

Breathability

In the heat of summer, your feet tend to sweat a lot. Your running socks should be breathable to wick away the sweat and keep you cool.

Fabric

Most running socks made from the hydrophobic synthetic fiber are ideal for running because they prevent chaffing and regulate body temperature. On the other hand, Nylon is a breathable fabric, super stretchy, and wicks away sweat.

Polyester is lightweight, breathable, and repels ultra-violet rays, while Lycra or Spandex is very elastic.

Merino Wool regulates temperature, wicks away sweat, is breathable, and has anti-bacterial properties.

Olefin is durable, abrasion resistant, lightweight, and easy to clean.

CoolMax wicks away moisture and is breathable, thin, dry fast, and soft on the skin.

Other fabrics include non-synthetic fabrics such as Bamboo, which is eco-friendly, non-synthetic, soft, wicks away sweat, and has anti-bacterial properties.

Avoid socks made from cotton fabric. Cotton tends to absorb and retain moisture, making you feel uncomfortable throughout the race.

THE BUYING GUIDE WHEN CHOOSING RUNNING SOCKS

Design

A seamless design around the toe and heel areas minimizes friction-triggered blisters on your pressure points. As you choose what socks are appropriate for you, take into consideration the shape and size of your feet. Some running socks are designed to have a bigger fit, whereas others suit pointed feet. The best design for your feet should fit firmly like a glove when you wear them.

Compatibility with Your running shoes

Running socks should be consistent with the interior materials of your shoes. This is important to minimize unnecessary friction to your feet.

Optimum Performance

In general, your choice of running socks should be able to complement your running shoes to boost your performance. For long-distance runners, the ability to endure prolonged training workouts should improve.

Your recovery time should also reduce as you utilize the right combination of running shoes and socks. With adequate cushioning on your feet, you should have fewer instances of impact-related injuries.

Frequently Asked Questions about Running Socks

  1.   Are running socks made from cotton bad?
  2. Socks made using 100% cotton are not suitable for running. A cotton and other fabrics blend may be appropriate if you cover short runs. Cotton tends to retain moisture instead of wicking it away. During winter, these socks will make your feet feel cold. Substitute pure cotton running socks with those made from either merino wool or synthetic fabrics.

  3. Do I have to wear socks when running?

  4. Yes. Socks will protect your feet from chafing and nasty blisters. They also protect your running shoes from wearing out due to sweat accumulating inside.

  5. How do I take care of my running socks?

  6. Running socks need to be cleaned and appropriately used to last long. Most running socks have product washing instructions indicated on the packaging. Follow these instructions. Normal running socks require to be washed separately in cold to lukewarm water using the gentle cycle wash. Compression running socks, on the other hand, are best suited for hand washing in lukewarm water. Avoid fabric softeners. Always air-dry your socks. However, nothing lasts forever. Know when to replace your threadbare socks with new ones.

  7. How do compression socks work?

  8. Compression socks are like a sheet of muscles embracing your feet. They gradually press down your foot to redistribute pressure from your various pressure points. In turn, you enjoy quick muscle recovery from a strenuous workout, fewer chances of muscle injury, and better blood circulation.

  9. How do I determine my size of compression running socks?

  10. Most manufacturers include a size chart in the packaging. This should guide you. In case your ideal size falls between two sizes, always go for the larger size.

In Conclusion

If you plan to invest in high-quality running shoes, then compliment them with equally high-quality running socks. The best running socks must be comfortable throughout the day, fit firmly on your feet, wick away sweat and any other moisture that builds up, have additional padding and compression for stability and balance, and never slip. Go for reliable brands such as Zensah, Balega, Physix Gear, and Thorlos.  With such brands, you are sure the socks’ design has your expectations in mind and that the manufacturer has gone the extra mile in giving considerable attention to their functional features. A reputable brand will also offer you a professional after-sales service.

  1. Honestly I have never thought about my socks before going for a run. I never knew how big of a difference they could make. That is probably why I have always hated running. Though Now that I have talked myself into doing a zombie run this year, I will be making sure i have the right socks for it! I have always just bought cotton socks, because that’s what I thought were best for every occasion. Thank you for informing me of how wrong I was! I will pay attention more to what I am putting on my feet before I go for my runs! Thank-you!

    • Hi, McKenzie Durhamand thank you.

You are one of many people had used cotton socks.  And it is easy to understand. The cotton socks are in many cases cheaper which has let them be very popular. And it can be very comfortable to run in it.

But the same is not much of a help in the aspect of moisture or sweat control. The cotton socks tend to absorb moisture or sweat that it comes in contact with and work to keep it against the feet.

Almost all of the running socks have wicking moisture technology which keeps sweat and moisture away from the socks and the feet. Which is part of the benefits of using runnings socks!
I wrote an article about the difference to run in running socks vs. cotton, and maybe it is interesting for you. If so, you can read it here.

  2. Hello! I have been thinking to buy a sports package or some pair of socks for my girlfriend for Christmas. We both have new years resolution for next year. What would you recommend for a woman who is 25 years old? I do not care about fashion or anything like that. Would love if the product is breaths and not too expensive

    • Hi, Øystein and thank you.

I´m sure she will be happy with comfortable socks. In this article are many very good pars of running socks. But I am sure that the guide I have in the post would help. What I have in mind is that you know the key things she needs to choose between the socks. Which is:
Does she sweat a lot while running?
Are her legs swell due to poor blood circulation when she runs?
What time of the day like her most to hit the trail?
Is she prone to getting blisters or fungal infection on your feet?

Thorlos and Balega would, for example, be an excellent choice.

Have in mind that this is for all ages.

If I can help you with anything else, or if you have any questions, don´t hesitate to contact me.

I’m going to check out some of your recommendations as well!

    • Hi, Shane Black and thank you.

You are not the only one to forget how vital running socks are. Many times I stress how important to build up to running equipment with the complete picture in mind so that you can have as much benefit of it as possible. But the point is that if you want to use all the benefits of your running shoes you need good running socks.

Because you say you are prone to blisters, have a look at the phD Run Light Elite Socks by SmartWool. Could be a good idea for you.

  4. Never game too much thought to my socks when running or working out.  Wow – have I been in the dark on this one.  You are right…those cotton socks are terrible.

You’ve given me a lot to think about…plus I have a vein problem in one of my legs and I think I would benefit from some of those compression socks.

Now if we could just find a way to have pairs of sock come out of the dryer…we would be solving one of life’s great mysteries…:)

Thanks for an awesome article and review…I have your site bookmarked!

  5. I really like the article very well put together and great information. I never knew that wearing proper socks would matter I have always just focused on my shoes. I have been getting in to hiking, still very new at it but this will help me a ton. Do you have any suggestions which socks would be best for a beginner hiker?  Thanks for the very informative post!

    • Hi, Jamie and thank you.

It is good to know that you have had good benefit of this article, socks are a very important part to have both successes and enjoy running.

About hiking.  When we focus on socks for hiking it is more about cushioning, socks height, that they fit well to a minimum the risk of blisters and I would like to have merino wool in mine.

With these things in mind, I would recommend Rockay Accelerate Anti-Blister Socks for you.

  6. I had no idea there were so many different types of socks or the reasons for all the different types.

I don’t go out running but I really do like the look of some of these socks.  I am sure that you don’t need to be a runner to wear them.  Do you?

This is very informative, I had never had a reason to think about the type of fabric that I was wearing on my feet.

I think that we should all choose more wisely what we put on our feet since a lot of people are on their feet all day, they should know that there are ways to help protect thier feet with the right sock.

    • Hi, Shy and thank you.

I agree. Wearing in good socks is always essential for your feet no matter if it is in daily life, sports (and have in mind to use socks for that sport you are in), hiking, etc. You ask if you can use this running socks in your daily life, you can do that.

It is too important to keep in mind that your running socks and your running shoes work together. Like I talk about in this posts:
“Running socks will wick away, and naturally, absorb some of the moisture that is generated when you run. If you do not wear socks, then your sweat will go straight into your shoe and soak into the fabric. While washing socks is relatively straightforward, washing your trainers is less so. They will develop a bad odor very quickly if you do not wear socks.”

  7. Thanks for sharing this timely article.  I did not know running socks came in such a variety…

Compression socks would be useful as I have a painful knee joint which hurts while going up and down stairs. Also I did not know that my cotton socks were contributing to nail fungus!  You have written a very thought provoking article here and I will take action to make sure the above ailments are addressed using the right gear.

    All the best,

  8. Hi.  I am interested in the quality “Breathable”. Temperature control and ventilation are the most important consideration in choosing a comfortable sock.  You have created a comprehensive review of this sock. You have described the cons clearly that I understand now well what I will get by buying running sock.  It has changed my mind about it and I have got useful ideas about what I want of the socks I buy.

It is always good to hear that the posts are useful. Sportssend.com have got a lot of very positive feedback about that, and I am grateful for that.

I agree about the focus on the quality. I believe that in the long run is it better if people can do that. Excellent quality of the socks mean in the last longer but at the same time it is better for your foot and maximal the benefit of your running shoes.

  9. I had no clue there was a special sock for running! It seems that these would also work great for line cooks and construction workers, as we tend to spend most of our time on our feet and always on the go. Would you agree or recommend a different sock all together?

I also had no clue that I should be avoiding cotton for sock material! Thanks for the heads up on that one, I wonder how many people do not know that?

Thanks for the great read about running socks, it actually helps me decide how to pick my next socks better.

Great to hear your benefit of the article.

You right, compression socks and help people in many jobs. In my opinion, there is no doubt that more people should use it in daily life. It is enough to think about how good effort it has on the blood circulation to not mention other great benefits of using it.

  10. You have such a wide selection of high quality socks.. It’s truly astounding! And I LOVE socks! Thank you for the in-depth information. I’m actually more of a skateboarder than a runner. So my choice socks are Stance. But you may have just convinced me to start wearing running socks for the support I need, instead of expensive shoes or insoles to compensate. Again, thanks for the info!

  11. I must thank you for doing this review as it is a little hard to find this type of review on the Net. I enjoy in running and it is one  of my best daily activities. Honestly, I never payed attention on my socks and high sweating is my biggest problem. I will definitely buy one pair for me but will also but one for my girl as a gift, she also like to jogging.

    • Hi, Daniel and thank you.

      Thank you for kind words.

You are for sure not the only one which does not pay enough attention to the running socks. Many people do not know that to get the maximal benefit of your running shoes; you need to have running socks because both are made with each other in mind.

About the sweat, many people have that problem, and it is not strange. But because of that is vital that your running socks are made of a breathable material to wick away the sweat and keep you fresh. On same time you feel yourself much more comfortable.

If I can help you with anything else, or if you have any questions, don´t hesitate to contact me.

  12. Hi,

I really haven’t given much thought to my running socks. I use anything from cotton, rayon, nylon, just name it. And man, I hate how my feet stink sometimes.

Even in dry and sunny weather, my feet are wet and sticky when I bring them out of my shoes. This can be quite embarrassing at times. Personally, I do not do a lot of running or jogging but the information you shared makes perfect sense.

Thanks for the checklist questions I need to pay attention to before buying a pair of running socks. I experience swelling in my legs due to poor blood circulation. I have noticed that it is worse when I wear knee-high running socks, hence my socks are ankle high. Other than the socks, do you think other factors may be responsible for my swelling legs?

Additionally, I have always thought that cotton socks are the best option as they tend to absorb swear more readily while I avoided nylon because I felt they would easily breed harmful bacteria around my feet. Thanks for this clarification. This makes a good read. I have bookmarked your site and would definitely come back when I need to purchase a new pair of running socks.

    • Hi, phranell86 and thank you.

After reading your list of the material you have used in your running socks, and many people have done it too, I am sure you will find the difference very quick if you start running in running socks. Have in mind also that most, if not all, running shoes is designed with that in mind that you use running socks. So to get the maximal benefits of your running shoes, or walking, you need running socks. So both running socks and running shoes is a combo which will help you are the swelling legs.

Thank you for kind words and good luck!

  14. Choosing the right socks for an activity these days is real science, so thank you for making it easier. I prefer wearing socks made from natural fibers when I go hiking and often wear bamboo socks, but I did not know that cotton socks are not good for running. I really like the Cloudline wool socks because it is using organically sourced wool. But I do wonder whether they will make my feet feel very warm?

I have not considered compression socks before, and they look as if they are ideal for not just running but also sitting for long times on a flight or in front of a computer.

Thank you for your kind words.

You are absolutely right! The compression socks are very good in flight.

The Cloudline socks are made of merino wool, so I would not be afraid of getting cold. This type of wool is really good.

Great to hear about your benefit of the article too.
