Now that you know what Zumba is and its benefits, let’s dive into the main question: are running shoes a good choice for Zumba?
Are Running Shoes Good for Zumba?
The answer isn’t straightforward if you’re wondering whether you should wear your running shoes to your next Zumba class. While some people might find running shoes comfortable and suitable for Zumba, others may prefer shoes specifically designed for dance fitness.
Let’s talk about the most common pros and cons of using running shoes for Zumba to help you decide whether it’s the footwear you should wear in your next Zumba class.
Benefits of Using Running Shoes for Zumba
Here are the top reasons why you should consider wearing running shoes while doing Zumba:
- Comfortable
Running shoes are typically designed to cushion and support the feet. They have thicker soles than dance shoes, which can help absorb shock and reduce the impact on the feet and joints. This feature can be helpful for people who have flat feet or high arches or those who experience pain while exercising.
- Versatile
Running shoes are designed for various types of workouts, including running, walking, and cross-training. This versatility can make them a good option for people who participate in different types of exercise classes and don’t want to buy multiple pairs of shoes.
- Breathable
Running shoes are often made with breathable materials that allow air to circulate around the feet. This feature can help prevent the feet from overheating and sweating excessively, which can be uncomfortable during an intense Zumba workout.
- Durable
Running shoes are designed to withstand wear and tear, making them durable enough for people who exercise frequently.
Drawbacks of Using Running Shoes for Zumba
Before deciding to wear running shoes for Zumba, make sure you make a note of the following disadvantages:
- High Traction
Running shoes have a thick soles with a lot of traction, which can be problematic for Zumba. The sole can grip the dance floor and make it difficult to pivot and turn, leading to a higher risk of injury.
- A Bit Heavy
Running shoes tend to be heavier than dance shoes, making it difficult to execute quick dance movements. This additional weight can tire the feet more quickly, leading to a decrease in performance.
- Little to No Support
While running shoes provide support for the feet, they may not provide enough support for the specific movements involved in Zumba. Dance shoes are designed to support the arch of the foot, which can be important for movements such as cha-cha, salsa, and other Latin dance steps.
- Less Stylish
Running shoes may not be the most stylish option for a Zumba class. Dance shoes are designed to be lightweight, flexible, and stylish, making them a popular choice among Zumba enthusiasts.
What Type of Shoes Should You Wear for Zumba?
If you’re serious about Zumba, it’s essential to wear the right type of shoes to avoid injury and maximize your performance. There are several factors to consider when choosing the best shoes for Zumba, including the type of shoes and the features they offer.
Let’s take a closer look at the highly recommended shoes that you can use for Zumba sessions.
Dance Sneakers
Dance sneakers are specifically designed for dance fitness classes such as Zumba. They offer flexibility, support, and cushioning, making them popular among Zumba enthusiasts.
Dance sneakers are lightweight and have a thin sole, which allows for better grip and flexibility on the dance floor. These shoes often have pivot points on the sole, which makes it easier to turn and pivot during Zumba.
We recommend the Capezio Womens Ds11 Fierce Sneaker Dance Shoes.
Cross-Training Shoes
Cross-training shoes are another option for Zumba. They are designed for various types of exercises, including weightlifting, aerobics, and dance.
These shoes offer stability, cushioning, and support, which can be helpful for the high-intensity movements involved in Zumba.
Our favorite cross-training shoes are the Ryka Women’s Influence Cross Trainers.
Minimalist Shoes
Minimalist shoes are a lightweight and flexible option for Zumba. They have a thin soles, allowing better contact with the dance floor and giving you more control over your movements.
These shoes offer minimal support and cushioning, which can be challenging for some people.
We particularly like the WHITIN Women’s Low Zero Drop Minimalist Shoes.
Studio Shoes
Studio shoes are designed for studio classes and are similar to dance sneakers. They offer flexibility, a split sole, and a non-marking sole. They’re lightweight and designed for quick movements.

Tennis Shoes
Tennis shoes are designed for side-to-side movement and can work for Zumba if they have good lateral support. They may not be as flexible as dance sneakers or cross-training shoes, but they can provide good stability and cushioning.
Our favorite is Adidas Womens Gamecourt 2 Tennis Shoes.
How to Choose the Right Zumba Shoes
When looking for a pair of shoes for your Zumba sessions, you should look into the different types of available footwear for you. There are also features you need to consider, whether you plan to buy running shoes or any other options.
You must look into the shoes’:
- Flexibility: Look for flexible shoes that allow for a full range of motion. This is especially important for Zumba, as the workout involves a lot of quick and precise movements.
- Cushioning: Look for shoes that provide adequate cushioning to absorb shock and reduce the impact on the feet and joints. This is important for people who have flat feet, high arches, or experience pain while exercising.
- Support: Look for shoes that provide good arch support, as this can help prevent injuries and improve performance. Dance sneakers provide support for the arch of the foot, making them a good option for Zumba.
- Traction: Look for shoes that provide enough traction to prevent slipping but not so much that they grip the dance floor and make it difficult to pivot and turn. Shoes with a pivot point on the sole can be helpful for Zumba, as they allow for smooth and easy turns.
- Breathability: Look for shoes made with breathable materials that allow air to circulate around the feet. This can help prevent the feet from overheating and sweating excessively, which can be uncomfortable during an intense Zumba workout.
Will You Wear Running Shoes to Zumba Classes?
Choosing the right shoes for Zumba is crucial for preventing injuries and maximizing performance. It’s important to consider the features that will provide the necessary support and flexibility, such as a split sole, good traction, and cushioning.
While running shoes may seem like a good option due to their cushioning and support, they aren’t the best for Zumba due to their lack of lateral support and flexibility.
Dance sneakers and cross-training shoes are two great options to consider, as they are designed with the specific needs of dance workouts in mind. Other options, such as studio shoes, aerobics shoes, cheerleading shoes, and tennis shoes, can also work for Zumba, depending on their design and features.

By choosing the right shoes, Zumba enthusiasts can enjoy a safe and comfortable workout that allows them to dance and move confidently.
My local gym has Zumba classes available and I’ve been meaning to check them out for some time, so this post is so helpful. I’d have defaulted to wearing my running trainers, but on your recommendation I realise something lighter and more supportive would be better. In your opinion, which shoe out of your recommended short list is best for a beginner?
Hi, Jessica, and thank you.
Thank you for your kind words.
There are some very good shoes for beginners, but check out Capezio Women’s DS11 Fierce Dansneak and Mfreely Cheer Shoes for Women! Both are good. But my thinking about recommending Mfreely Cheer Shoes, even so, you can find more flexible shoes, is that their support is very good and that is good to have for beginners.
Great to hear about the benefit of the article too.

I remember when I started doing Zumba, I had problems finding adequate training. I changed sneakers but I couldn’t find adequate ones, my feet hurt and I was very tired, so I thought I would be absent. If I had this post back then, it would have been easy for me, I would have saved time and money and gotten rid of pain, and I would have looked forward to Zumba more.
This post is definitely useful and very well written, for those of us who have been doing Zumba for a long time and for beginners, of course.
Thank you for taking the effort to give us advice and make it easier for us to choose footwear for this wonderful sport/hobby.
