Additionally, the Segmented Crash Pad on the outsole facilitates smooth transitions. The pad absorbs shock and promotes an efficient running gait.

WHAT WE DON’T LIKE

The shoe lacks additional cushioning or padding in the sole. This results in a firmer feel underfoot. This characteristic can have both positive and negative implications depending on individual preferences and the intended use of the product.

On the downside, the lack of extra padding might lead to a less cushioned and softer feel. This is harsh during activities that involve repeated impact, such as running or high-impact sports.

This could potentially result in discomfort or fatigue. Individuals with sensitivity to hard surfaces or those seeking enhanced shock absorption might not appreciate this shoe.

PROS:
  • Holistic GuideRails Support.
  • Responsive DNA LOFT Midsole.
  • Breathable Engineered Mesh.
  • Secure 3D Fit Print.

5. ALTRA Women’s Escalante 2

No products found.

The ALTRA Women’s Escalante 2 is an upgraded version of the popular ALTRA Escalante.

Although there weren’t many new additions in terms of features, the shoes’ overall comfort and stability have improved by a large margin.

Product Highlights

The ALTRA Women’s Escalante 2 features a zero-drop base and a foot-shaped toe box.

This model has always been focused on comfort, but the improved protection made it one of the best women’s running shoes for overpronation.

It features a zero millimeter heel-to-toe drop, giving the heel and forefoot the same distance from the ground.

What’s more, wearing these shoes means you get a low-impact landing, which is very beneficial for people with overpronation.

The Escalante 2 kept its Altra EGO midsole, but it now has added flex grooves on the midsole and outsole to guarantee smoother performance.

The upper is redesigned, as well, because it now provides a more secure fit on the midfoot.

This shoe is made a bit narrow compared to the previous model, so if your feet are a bit wide, it may not fit perfectly.

No products found.

What We Like

The best reason to buy the ALTRA Women’s Escalante 2 is the Altra EGO midsole with the flex grooves.

The midsole itself was already an amazing feature on the first model.

However, with the addition of the flex grooves, the shoe became even more flexible.

What We Don’t Like

With all the protection added to it, Altra failed to add a waterproofing feature on the shoe.

If it gets wet, your feet will surely get wet, as well.

PROS:
  • Durable construction
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Better support
  • It comes available in seven colorways
CONS:
  • No waterproof feature

The Feetmat Men’s Athletic Running Shoes offers a wide range of features, but it is not a good pick for more challenging terrain.

The ASICS Men’s Gel-Kayano 26 is still a hot choice even after the series slowed down on manufacturing new models.

The Gel-Kayano 26 offers similar features as the Kayano 25, but there are a few design changes, too.

Most of the improvements made are for better motion control and for more support.

Product Highlights

The ASICS Men’s Gel-Kayano 26 is still a top choice until now, with its Impact Guidance System (IGS) technology.

This is a design philosophy of ASICS that uses linked componentry to improve the natural gait of the foot from heel-strike to toe-off.

The SpevaFoam 45 Lasting provides a 45-degree length of material for a soft and comfortable feeling when wearing the shoe.

Also, there’s the FlyteFoam Propel Technology. It is an energetic foam formulation that offers excellent bounce because of its unique elastomer compound.

The FlyteFoam Lyte Technology, on the other hand, provides a lightweight midsole formulation. In turn, this ensures better cushioning through the organic nanofibers.

Lastly, you will also get the DuoMax Support System, a midsole system that enhances the shoe’s support and stability.

What We Like

If you want the best motion control running shoe, the DuoMax Support System of the ASICS Men’s Gel-Kayano 26 is probably the best feature you are looking for.

It offers the support you need for your feet, thus improving your stability while running.

What We Don’t Like

The ASICS Men’s Gel-Kayano 26 offers a wide range of features.

This is the perfect choice for almost any type of runner.

More than anything, it is very comfortable to wear running, thanks to all the cushioning and support it provides.

What We Don’t Like

The middle padding is made from cheap materials, so it might collapse in just a few months of use, especially if you run regularly.

PROS:
  • Stylish look
  • Flexible
  • Durable construction
  • 40+ color options available
CONS:
  • Poor middle padding

5. Saucony Men’s Cohesion 10

No products found.

It is a popular choice if you want something more affordable but still provides decent support and comfort.

Product Highlights

The Saucony Men’s Cohesion 10 features an injection-molded midsole.

Still, its most notable feature is the IMEVA midsole, which makes the shoe very comfortable and bouncy.

There is no support on the midfoot, though, because it is made for neutral runners.

The upper comes with a traditional PU overlay stitched on an air mesh, which means that it provides good support and breathability.

You’ll find that this pair has a rubber outsole, which is one of this shoe’s weaknesses.

Even with the iBR+ rubber and XT-900 carbon rubber, the shoe’s grip is still too weak compared to other running shoes.

No products found.

What We Like

The best thing about Saucony Men’s Cohesion 10 is its price.

It is perfect for people looking for affordable yet supportive and comfortable running shoes.

What We Don’t Like

The rubber outsole is definitely a bad idea for this running shoe because it is very slippery when the ground is wet.

It is not a good choice if you plan to run during the rainy season as you might get an accident.

PROS:
  • Very affordable
  • Durable construction
  • Comfortable to wear
  • Up to 11 colorways available
CONS:
  • Slippery on wet grounds

Buyer’s Guide

With the many options presented earlier, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed, especially if you don’t really have an idea of what you’re looking for.

For that, we’ve got your back.

Below are factors to consider when choosing motion-control running shoes:

Outsole

When buying a motion-control running shoe, make sure you avoid rubber outsoles at all costs.

Be extra wary of cheap rubber since they are usually very slippery when the ground is wet.

You need to make sure that the rubber provides a nice, easy motion and grip to any surface.

This will provide you with better protection against any accidents and injuries while running.

Cushioning

You are trying to prevent overpronation, so you need shoes with more cushioning to absorb the impact when running.

However, more cushioning means that the shoe would be heavier.

In that case, you need to balance the weight and the cushioning of the shoe.

The best thing to do about this is to try the shoes out and see if it is too heavy for your feet. Check its comfortability, as well.

How do I know if my shoes are motion control

Flexibility

The goal of a motion-control running shoe is to hold your foot in a specific position at all times to prevent injuries.

Still, it doesn’t mean that the shoe should not be flexible.

Although it is contradicting, manufacturers found a way to provide that needed support on your feet while keeping a good amount of flexibility in the shoes.

It has to keep your feet in place while allowing a bit of motion to ensure your feet will be comfortable while running.

Breathability

Every motion-control running shoe should be breathable and provide good air circulation to your feet.

This would make sure that moisture and sweat won’t stay inside your shoes. It can avoid bad odor and nasty infections, as well.

When looking for motion-control running shoes, make sure you opt for a model with a synthetic mesh upper.

These are cheaper compared to other materials, but it is the perfect choice for more breathability. It can also reduce the weight of the shoe.

Then again, if you choose breathability, you cannot expect your shoes to have waterproofing features.

As such, you cannot use your shoes when raining or during winter, as it would expose your feet to too much moisture.

Durability

Durable materials are usually extremely heavy, but motion-control running shoes should be lightweight.

This means that this type of shoe is not as durable as other running shoes made for more support and protection.

A motion-control running shoe sits in the middle since it has to be lightweight and needs to provide decent protection to the runner.

The shoe should be made from lightweight but durable materials that can at least handle the complexity of the terrain.

You might see a lot of people complaining about durability but don’t fret since most motion-control running shoes are not as durable as other running shoes.

Style

No one wants to wear ugly running shoes, so you need to be very meticulous when it comes to style.

Most of these shoes come in different designs and colors, so you won’t have a hard time choosing the style you want.

There are also shoes that are made to be very stylish, but you need to be careful and check the features before buying.

What are motion control shoes

Motion Control Running Shoes FAQs

1. What are motion control shoes?

The best motion control running shoes are made to decrease the effects of pronation by limiting excessive foot motions.

These shoes are designed with better medial support to improve the stability of the foot.

The goal of the shoe is to keep the feet in place and prevent them from rolling inwards.

Pronation is a natural side-to-side movement of your foot when running or walking, which means your foot will roll inward with every step.

This kind of condition can cause serious injuries when you are running.

2. What is the difference between stability and motion control running shoes?

Motion-control shoes are made to hold the foot firmly and prevent your foot from rolling inwards.

These shoes have a stiff heel with a straight shape, and it provides better support under the arch.

On the other hand, stability shoes provide some motion control, too.

However, it has better support, flexibility, and cushioning compared with motion-control shoes.

They have more support on the midsole to help reinforce the arch.

Most running and trail shoes are designed like this because of the changing terrain.

3. Can overpronators run in neutral shoes?

It is a matter of choice, really.

Still, most experts suggest that overpronators should avoid neutral shoes at all costs because the risk of injury is higher compared to motion-control shoes.

Neutral shoes might be more comfortable, but it doesn’t provide any protection in case you make a wrong step while running.

The shoe will also last longer if you opt for a motion-control shoe instead of a neutral shoe.

You can expect that neutral shoes will not even last a year if an overpronator uses them.

4. How do I know if my shoes are motion control?

The best thing to check if you want to know if your shoes are motion-control would be its stability.

If you are having a hard time flexing or moving the foot without guidance, it means that you are using a motion-control shoe.

5. Do I really need stability running shoes?

If you are dealing with pronation or overpronation, you definitely need stability running shoes.

They would reduce the risk of injuries when running, and they can help keep your feet stable at all times.

What Are the Best Motion Control Running Shoes?

Among the different motion-control running shoes for women on this list, the best one is the ASICS Gel-Venture 9.

One of the important things in that decision is the High Abrasion Rubber Outsole provides reliable traction on diverse surfaces.
Which makes the Gel-Venture 9 a versatile choice suitable for navigating a spectrum of trails as we said in the review.

As for men’s motion-control running shoes, the ASICS Gel-Kayano 26 is the best if you look at overall features.

It is not as durable as the other shoes on the list, but the support and comfort it provides make up for its construction.

  6. Good Morning, great and thorough article!

I am a huge runner, and I can appreciate a good running shoe. I don’t experience a lot of injuries. However, I have high arches and put a lot of pressure on the balls of my feet to do the work. I am sure I experience slight overpronation as well, but not enough to cause injuries.

Reading through each shoe you’ve suggested, I am really leaning towards the ALTRA Women’s Escalante 2 as it features low impact landing and mid-foot comfort.
I appreciate your article and look forward to the next one!
